TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented a comparison between the MINER RULE and the FLEXURAL STRESS model, and the results showed that the latter may give CONSERVATIVE or UNSAFE PREDICTIONS of the FATIGUE STRENGTH DEPENDING on the LOAD PROGRAM.
Abstract: PLAIN CONCRETE SPECIMENS WERE SUBJECTED TO REPEATED FLEXURAL STRESSES ACCORDING TO VARIOUS LOAD HISTORIES. THE MAXIMUM LOAD WITHIN A TEST WAS VARIED BETWEEN TWO LIMITS, OR REST PERIODS WERE USED. THE RESULTS WERE INTERPRETED ACCORDING TO VARIOUS PHYSICAL MODELS AND COMPARED TO THE MINER RULE. THIS HYPOTHESIS MAY GIVE CONSERVATIVE OR UNSAFE PREDICTIONS OF THE FATIGUE STRENGTH DEPENDING ON THE LOAD PROGRAM. AN IMPROVED DESIGN METHOD IS SUGGESTED.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of the machining quality on the mechanical behavior of CFRP composites is examined and the effect of two machining processes, namely, conventional machining and abrasive water jet machining, on the behavior of composite plates under cyclic loading is investigated.
Abstract: The influence of the machining quality on the mechanical behavior of CFRP composites is yet not fully understood. There are only few works in the literature that have investigated the effect of the machining quality on CFRP. In fact, most of these works focus only on conventional machining such as axial or orbital drilling. The aim of this paper is to examine the influence of two machining processes namely conventional machining (CM) and abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) on the mechanical behavior of composite plates under cyclic loading. For this purpose, an experimental study using several composite plates drilled with a cutting tool and an abrasive water jet machining was carried out. In order to study the impact of the process of machining on the mechanical behavior, thermographic infrared testing and fatigue cyclic tests were performed to assess temperature evolutions, stiffness degradation, and the damage evolution in these plates. Fatigue testing results have shown that the damage accumulation in specimens drilled with CM process was higher than the AWJM specimens. Furthermore, the endurance limit for a composite plate drilled with CM was approximately 10% inferior compared to specimens drilled with AWJM. This difference can be related to the initial surface integrity after machining induced by the difference in the mechanism of material’s removal between the two processes used.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cumulative fatigue damage model is presented for predicting the fatigue life of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) subjected to variable amplitude fatigue loading, which is assumed that the cumulative fatigue damages caused by the cyclic loading is proportional to the strength loss of FRP, and that the damage state in laminates can be described phenomenologically by residual strength.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of the presence of soft zones along grain boundaries in high-strength Al and β-Ti alloys is discussed, and the role of the strength difference between the age hardened matrix and the soft grain boundary layers is discussed.
Abstract: This paper discusses the effect of the presence of soft zones along grain boundaries in high-strength Al and β-Ti alloys. Soft zones are deformed preferentially and therefore have a strong effect on fracture related properties. The presentation focuses on the ductility, the high-cycle fatigue strength, and the fracture toughness. For microstructures with pancake-shaped grains, the anisotropy of the mechanical properties is discussed on the basis of the effective slip length, determined by the length of the soft grain boundary zones. In high-strength Al alloys, the presence of hard inclusions additionally affects the fracture behavior. For β-Ti alloys, the role of the strength difference between the age hardened matrix and the soft grain boundary layers is discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the fatigue strength of spot welded joints can be assessed on the basis of the local stress state at the weld spot edge, according to which the stress intensity factors are proportional to the structural stresses multiplied by the square root from the thickness of the plate, comprehensively substantiated, extended and quantified by means of systematic calculations using the boundary element method.
