TL;DR: In this article, an analytical model for simulating the static response and accelerated fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates is presented.
Abstract: Extensive testing has shown that externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates are particularly suited for improving the short-term behavior of deficient reinforced concrete beams. Accelerated fatigue tests conducted to date confirm that fatigue response is also improved. This paper describes an analytical model for simulating the static response and accelerated fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP laminates. Static and fatigue calculations are carried out using a fiber section model that accounts for the nonlinear time-dependent behavior of concrete, steel yielding, and rupture of CFRP laminates. Analysis results are compared with experimental data from two sets of accelerated fatigue tests on CFRP strengthened beams and show good agreement. Cyclic fatigue causes a time-dependent redistribution of stresses, which leads to a mild increase in steel and CFRP laminate stresses as fatigue life is exhausted. Based on the findigns, design considerations are suggested for the repair and/or strengthening of reinforced concrete beams using CFRP laminates.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of microstructural characteristics on high-cycle fatigue properties and fatigue crack propagation behavior of welded regions of an investment cast Ti-6Al-4V were investigated.
Abstract: The effect of microstructural characteristics on high-cycle fatigue properties and fatigue crack propagation behavior of welded regions of an investment cast Ti-6Al-4V were investigated. High-cycle fatigue and fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on the welded regions, which were processed by two different welding methods: tungsten inert gas (TIG) and electron beam (EB) welding. Test data were analyzed in relation to microstructure, tensile properties, and fatigue fracture mode. The base metal was composed of an alpha plate colony structure transformed to a basket-weave structure with thin α platelets after welding and annealing. High-cycle fatigue results indicated that fatigue strength of the EB weld was lower than that of the base metal or the TIG weld because of the existence of large micropores formed during welding, although it had the highest yield strength. In the case of the fatigue crack propagation, the EB weld composed of thinner α platelets had a faster crack propagation rate than the base metal or the TIG weld. The effective microstructural feature determining the fatigue crack propagation rate was found to be the width of α platelets because it was well matched with the reversed cyclic plastic zone size calculated in the threshold Δ K regime.

TL;DR: In this paper, a non-local stress approach for fatigue assessment based on weakest-link theory and statistics of extremes is presented, which takes the complete stress field into account rather than just the highest local stress.
Abstract: In the present paper a non-local stress approach for fatigue assessment based on weakest-link theory and statistics of extremes is presented. It is a non-local stress approach in the sense that it takes the complete stress field into account rather than just the highest local stress. The statistical distribution of fatigue strength data from smooth standard specimens serves as a starting point for the computation of the probability of fatigue failure of a mechanical component under cyclic loading. The probability of fatigue failure can be obtained by post-processing results from a standard finite element stress analysis. It is shown that the non-local stress approach can be linked to the probability of finding the fatigue critical defect in the most highly stressed volume of the component. A numerical procedure is presented that is fully compatible with the results from a standard finite element stress analysis. It is further shown how the fatigue strength distribution can be transformed into a fatigue life distribution by using Basquin's equation. Finally, the non-local stress approach is used for predicting the fatigue limit of several specimens and predictions are compared with test results.
