TL;DR: The low cycle fatigue behavior of three wrought nickel-base alloys, alloy 901, Waspaloy and alloy 718, has been examined at both room temperature and 811 K (1000°F).
Abstract: The low cycle fatigue behavior of three wrought nickel-base alloys, alloy 901, Waspaloy and alloy 718, has been examined at both room temperature and 811 K (1000°F). The fatigue properties can be rationalized in terms of the Manson-Coffin equation relating total strain range with the number of cycles to failure. For a given total strain range the fatigue life of the alloys at 811 K (1000°F) is substantially less than at room temperature. Microstructural examination revealed that crack nucleation and initial propagation was of classical stage I type. The cracks develop at the surface of test specimens and propagate along slip planes. Evidence is presented to relate the observed fatigue softening with shear and dissolution of γ precipitates.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the fatigue behavior of 3-mol%yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals and found that microcracking is the dominant mechanism of fatigue damage, and that nucleation of fatigue crack is usually not necessary.
Abstract: ~Uniaxial tension-compression fatigue behavior of 3-mol%yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals was investigated. Hysteresis in the stress-plastic strain curve featured cumulative plastic strain and weakened elastic stiffness. Fracture statistics in terms of cycle-to-failure depends strongly on the maximum stress and less on the stress amplitude. Preexisting processing flaws were identified as the fracture origins in all cases. We suggest that microcracking is the dominant mechanism of fatigue damage, that nucleation of fatigue crack is usually not necessary, and that fatigue lifetime is primarily controlled by crack propagation, which is most sensitive to the maximum stress. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors performed ultrasonic fatigue tests with smooth and notched bearing steel of two batches (JIS SUJ2-A and SUJ 2-B) and found that the S-N curves obtained from the smooth specimens were different and both did not show a distinct two-step.
