TL;DR: A time-sharing computer program written to implement a man-machine interactive algorithm for the solution of the multiple criteria problem which obtains information from the decision-maker through a series of simple, ordinal comparisons.
Abstract: This note presents a description of a time-sharing computer program written to implement a man-machine interactive algorithm for the solution of the multiple criteria problem. The interactive algorithm was suggested in a recent paper by Geoffrion, “Vector Maximal Decomposition Programming,” Working Paper No. 164, Western Management Science Institute, University of California, Los Angeles, September 1970. A unique feature of this program is the man-machine dialog which obtains information from the decision-maker through a series of simple, ordinal comparisons.

TL;DR: The authors compared three feature list sets for capital letters, previously proposed by different investigators, on the ability of each to predict empirical confusion matrices, and found that the best model incorporated variable feature retrieval probabilities, a goodness-of-match lower threshold below which guessing determines response, and response bias on guessing trials.
Abstract: This report compares three feature list sets for capital letters, previously proposed by different investigators, on the ability of each to predict empirical confusion matrices. Toward this end, several variants of assumed information processes in recognition were also compared. The best model incorporated: (1) variable feature retrieval probabilities, (2) a goodness-of-match lower threshold below which guessing determines response, and (3) response bias on guessing trials. This model, when combined with one particular proposed feature list set, produced stress values of less than 9% in comparisons to empirical matrices for each of three different Ss. The feature retrieval probability vectors associated with these minimum-stress predictions were highly correlated (\(\bar r = .83\)), suggesting considerable generality of process and feature sets between Ss.

TL;DR: In this paper, a special purpose pipeline digital computer is disclosed for processing a pair of related, digitally encoded, images to produce a difference image showing any dissimilarities between the first image and the second image.
Abstract: A special purpose pipeline digital computer is disclosed for processing a pair of related, digitally encoded, images to produce a difference image showing any dissimilarities between the first image and the second image. The computer is comprised of a number of special purpose pipeline processors linked to a supervisory general purpose processor. First, a initial image warp transformation is computed by a spatial transformation pipeline processor using a plurality of operator selected, feature related, match points on the pair of images, and then, image correlation is performed by a dot product processor working with a square root and divide processor to identify the exact matching location of a second group matching points selected in a geometrical pattern, on the pair of images. The final image warp transformation to achieve image registration occurs in the spatial transformation processor, using a localized polylateral technique having the geometrically selected match points as the vertrices of the polylaterals. Finally, photoequalization is performed and the difference image is generated from the pair of registered images by a photoequalization processor.

TL;DR: In this paper, a continuous-tone image is scanned to produce color-separation images in halftone dots, and edges of features in the scanned image are sensed, and the positions and shapes of the halftones that define corresponding edges in the reproductions are adjusted so that they conform better to the feature edges.
Abstract: A continuous-tone image, which can be in full color, is scanned to produce color-separation images in halftone dots. Edges of features in the scanned image are sensed, and the positions and shapes of the halftone dots that define corresponding edges in the halftone reproductions are adjusted so that they conform better to the feature edges. This reduces or eliminates the apparent serrations or roughness of feature edges in the halftone reproductions otherwise caused by misalignment of the halftone dots with the feature edges and improves image definition. A selection of a screen angle is made from a plurality of screen angles.

TL;DR: In this paper, a feature extractor of character and figure is adapted to store the variety, coordinate and total number of the thus searched features to separate registers for comparison with the features of standard characters.
Abstract: From a register in which a two-valued pattern is stored there is sequentially extracted information along three vertical scanning lines, from which information over the region of 3 by 3 bits is selectively extracted in succession by means of data selectors. Features are searched by comparing the thus extracted information with a mask having a predetermined pattern in bits. The feature extractor of character and figure is adapted to store the variety, coordinate and total number of the thus searched features to separate registers for comparison with the features of standard characters.

TL;DR: Nonstandard analysis as discussed by the authors is a branch of mathematics in which usual notions about analysis and topology can be formulated in an attractive and condensed manner, and the main feature of this theory is that it introduces the concept of infinitely large or small numbers and allows one to compute with them in exactly the same way as in ordinary analysis.
Abstract: Nonstandard analysis is a recent branch of mathematics in which usual notions about analysis and topology can be formulated in an attractive and condensed manner. The main feature of this theory is that it introduces the concept of infinitely large or small numbers and that it allows one to compute with them in exactly the same way as in ordinary analysis. We believe that in the long run this new language might be usefully applied to physics. However, we only present a few examples of a rather trivial nature, our purpose being to give a short introduction of the subject to physicists. Thus we omit most of the technical subtleties especially those of a metamathematical nature, and we concentrate our attention on the practical side of the theory.

TL;DR: In this article, a can construction is used to enable a quick and direct access to any underlying chute to separate a line therefrom, as and when required, without need for a cutting of the line.
Abstract: Line or cable laying apparatus for underground placement of lines characterized by a plurality of channel-shaped elements defining guide chutes separably coupled in a nested or piggy-back arrangement. Each superposed guide chute forms a gate member for an underlying chute. The elements of the assembly feature a can construction which facilitates the ready operation of the gate members. This last feature enables a quick and direct access to any underlying chute to separate a line therefrom, as and when required, without need for a cutting of the line.

TL;DR: It is evident that not only are such concepts as ‘point’ and ‘boundary’ used in everyday descriptions, but they also are assumed to conform to certain general principles which underlie inferences.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to sketch aspects of the analysis of some ‘naive’ topological concepts which enter into everyday descriptions of features of the surfaces of physical bodies Examples of such descriptions and of the reasoning involving them are to say that: (a) Feature A (say a reddish region on the surface of a cube) touches but does not completely cover feature B (say an edge of the cube), from which it can be inferred that feature B touches the edge or boundary of feature A (b) Several features meet in a common point, from which it can be inferred that any two of them touch, (c) The surface of a transparent object has places or points on it where there are no features (at any rate, no visually discernible ones) It is evident that not only are such concepts as ‘point’ and ‘boundary’ used in everyday descriptions, but they also are assumed to conform to certain general principles which underlie inferences These general principles can be regarded as elements of an implicit ‘naive topological theory’ of the surface of a body, which I hope to clarify in the present analysis

The report describes a method of handling cases in which the peaks are very unequal in size and the valley is broad. A Laplacian operation is applied to the picture to determine points that lie on or near the edges of objects. Threshold selection becomes easier when the frequency distribution of gray levels of these points is used. (Author)

Abstract: A method is formulated for systematically using experimental measurements of the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a structure to modify stiffness and mass characteristics of a finite element model. Throughout the modification process, which does not require complete data, the finite element model remains consistent. An additional feature is that the engineer's confidence in the modeling of the various finite elements is quantified and incorporated into the revision procedure. Examples demonstrate the convergence and versatility of the method.
