TL;DR: The Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems Technology Demonstration (TEMPEST-D) instrument is a five-frequency millimeter-wave radiometer capable of observing thermal radiation from the Earth at 89, 165, 176, 180, and 182 GHz.
Abstract: The Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems Technology Demonstration (TEMPEST-D) instrument is a five-frequency millimeter-wave radiometer capable of observing thermal radiation from the Earth at 89, 165, 176, 180, and 182 GHz. The direct-detection architecture of the radiometer reduces its power consumption and eliminates the need for a local oscillator and mixer, reducing complexity. The instrument includes an ambient blackbody calibration target and a scanning reflector. The reflector rotates to scan the antenna beams in the cross-track direction so that the TEMPEST-D feed horn and receiver view first the blackbody calibration target, then the Earth over a range of nadir angles from −45° to +45°, and finally the cosmic microwave background radiation at 2.73 K. This enables precision end-to-end calibration of the millimeter-wave receivers every scan period. The TEMPEST-D millimeter-wave radiometers are based on 35-nm InP HEMT MMIC low-noise amplifiers and related technology developed under extensive investment by the NASA Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO).

TL;DR: In this paper, an antenna system for generating and configuring at least one defocused beam is provided, which includes a reflector having a focal plane and a non-parabolic curvature for forming the at least 1 defocused beacon, and a plurality of feed antennas that illuminate the reflector.
Abstract: An antenna system for generating and configuring at least one defocused beam is provided. The antenna system includes a reflector having a focal plane and a non-parabolic curvature for forming the at least one defocused beam, and a plurality of feed antennas that illuminate the reflector. Each feed antenna is disposed in the focal plane of the reflector. The antenna system further includes at least one incoming signal dividing network that divides at least one incoming signal into a plurality of sub-signals, each corresponding to one of the feed antenna; a plurality of variable phase shifters, each receiving one of the sub- signals from the incoming signal dividing network and phase shifting the sub-signal to generate a corresponding phase-shifted sub-signal, and a plurality of fixed-amplitude amplifiers, at least one corresponding to each of the feed antennas. The at least one amplifier for each feed antenna amplifies the corresponding phase-shifted sub-signal to generate an amplified phase-shifted sub-signal which is provided to the corresponding feed antenna.

TL;DR: In this article, a theoretical study has been carried out on the 90° corrugated horn for a structure possessing an 'arbitrary, but finite, number of corrugations'.
Abstract: Wide-angle corrugated horns have found important practical applications as feeds for front-fed reflector antennas when low levels of crosspolarisation are required. A theoretical study has been carried out on the 90° corrugated horn for a structure possessing an 'arbitrary, but finite, number of corrugations. Computed and measured results are shown to be in good agreement for a horn possessing three annular slots.

Abstract: We have developed a cartridge-type 800 GHz receiver for the ASTE telescope in Atacama, Chile. The receiver has been assembled with a cooled receiver optics, a Nb-based SIS mixer, a local oscillator (LO) optics and IF components in a 170 mm diameter column-type cartridge. The cooled optics is composed of a single ellipsoidal mirror to couple between the feed horn and the subreflector of the antenna, and an LO coupler with 10 % eciency. Owing to its cartridge and cryostat structure, the mechanical vibrations of the GM cryocooler are significantly reduced, therefore, the receiver is highly stable on the telescope. The receiver noise temperature using a Nb-based SIS mixer and a 4i8 GHz HEMT amplifier is attained to 1300 K in DSB at an LO frequency of 815 GHz. The system noise temperature, Tsys, was typically 4000i8000 K in DSB at an LO frequency of 812 GHz during the operations, which depended on the atmospheric opacity. The typical zenith opacity at an LO frequency of 812 GHz was » 1. The half-power beam width (HPBW) of the main beam was
