TL;DR: In this article, the authors review recent progress in application of femtosecond laser nanostructuring of fused silica and demonstrate tight control of nanostructure' properties through writing parameters.
Abstract: We review recent progress in application of femtosecond laser nanostructuring of fused silica. The tight control of nanostructures’ properties through writing parameters is demonstrated implementing elements with unique optical properties, which can be widely used in material processing, microscopy, optical trapping and manipulation.

TL;DR: In this article, the Teramobile system, a femtosecond multi-terawatt laser and detection system based on a CPA laser system embedded in a standard freight container, is described.
Abstract: We describe the Teramobile system, a new mobile femtosecond multi-terawatt laser and detection system based on a state-of-the art CPA laser system embedded in a standard freight container, as well as a mobile detection unit allowing a characterization of the nonlinear propagation of high power laser pulses over long horizontal distances. The unique mobility feature of the whole system opens the way to previously unreachable applications for high-power laser pulses in the field of atmospheric research (lidar, laser-triggered lightning), which are also briefly reviewed.

TL;DR: A systematic study of the energy dependence of the plasma-mediated ablation of fluorescently-labeled subcellular structures in the cytoskeleton and nuclei of fixed endothelial cells using femtosecond, near-infrared laser pulses focused through a high-numerical aperture objective lens finds that the energy threshold for photobleaching lies between 0.9 and 1.7 nJ.
Abstract: Precise dissection of cells with ultrashort laser pulses requires a clear understanding of how the onset and extent of ablation (i.e., the removal of material) depends on pulse energy. We carried out a systematic study of the energy dependence of the plasma-mediated ablation of fluorescently-labeled subcellular structures in the cytoskeleton and nuclei of fixed endothelial cells using femtosecond, near-infrared laser pulses focused through a high-numerical aperture objective lens (1.4 NA). We find that the energy threshold for photobleaching lies between 0.9 and 1.7 nJ. By comparing the changes in fluorescence with the actual material loss determined by electron microscopy, we find that the threshold for true material ablation is about 20% higher than the photobleaching threshold. This information makes it possible to use the fluorescence to determine the onset of true material ablation without resorting to electron microscopy. We confirm the precision of this technique by severing a single microtubule without disrupting the neighboring microtubules, less than 1 micrometer away. c2005 Optical Society of America.

TL;DR: A simple experiment to directly determine the critical power for self-focusing in air by measuring the focal shift of the focused femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses.
Abstract: We report a simple experiment to directly determine the critical power for self-focusing in air by measuring the focal shift of the focused femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses. The measured critical power is 10 GW for the 42 fs laser pulse; it gradually decreases to 5 GW for (chirped) pulse duration longer than 200 fs.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors observed structural changes in the glass network of fused silica after modification by tightly focused 800-nm, 130-fs laser pulses at fluences between 5 and 200 cm-2.
Abstract: Atomic-scale structural changes have been observed in the glass network of fused silica after modification by tightly focused 800-nm, 130-fs laser pulses at fluences between 5 and 200 J cm-2. Raman spectroscopy of the modified glass shows an increase in the 490 and 605-cm-1 peaks, indicating an increase in the number of 4- and 3-membered ring structures in the silica network. These results provide evidence that densification of the glass occurs after exposure to fs pulses. Fluorescence spectroscopy of the modified glass shows a broad fluorescence band at 630 nm, indicating the formation of non-bridging oxygen hole centers (NBOHC) by fs pulses. Waveguides that support the fundamental mode at 633 nm have been fabricated inside fused silica by scanning the glass along the fs laser beam axis. The index changes are estimated to be approximately 0.07×10-3.
