TL;DR: Paul Diesing as discussed by the authors defines science not by reference to these arbitrary norms delineated by those outside the field but in terms of norms implicit in what social scientists actually do in their everyday work.
Abstract: Social scientists are often vexed because their work does not satisfy the criteria of "scientific" methodology developed by philosophers of science and logicians who use the natural sciences as their model. In this study, Paul Diesing defines science not by reference to these arbitrary norms delineated by those outside the field but in terms of norms implicit in what social scientists actually do in their everyday work.

TL;DR: The history of the family as an interdisciplinary field as mentioned in this paper has been widely interpreted as a new field, its boundaries undefined, and its future definition and character of the field will depend on the nature of work done in the next decade.
Abstract: The History of the Family as an Interdisciplinary Field As a new field, the history of the family is broadly interpreted, its boundaries undefined. "Family" is loosely used in reference to the historical study of childhood and youth, certain aspects of the history of education, and the history of women and feminist movements. The field is frequently confused with what might be considered some of its parts. It has also been identified with "psychohistory," although not all aspects of the history of the family have involved psychological interpretations. The future definition and character of the field will depend on the nature of work done in the next decade.

TL;DR: The study of elites, or "who's who, when, and how" as Professor Rustow has described this field, has long been a topic of concern to scholars in a wide variety of disciplines as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The study of elites, or “who's who, when, and how,” as Professor Rustow has described this field, has long been a topic of concern to scholars in a wide variety of disciplines. Social and political philosophers dating back to Aristotle and including such diverse figures as Marx, Pareto, and Mosca have written about the relationships between elites and the social order, and a host of social scientists and historians have carried out detailed analyses of the social background of highlevel decision-makers in various societies

TL;DR: This paper discussed the hesitations that many social scientists feel about venturing into the field and discussed the difficulty in remaining anonymous, a reluctance to pry, fear of observing illicit behavior, lack of patience, and personal danger and discomfort.
Abstract: Field research is not for the soft-hearted, the self-conscious, or the person who requires a great deal of structure. Some of the hesitations that many social scientists feel about venturing into the field are discussed. These include the difficulty in remaining anonymous, a reluctance to pry, fear of observing illicit behavior, lack of patience, and personal danger and discomfort.

Abstract: EDRS Price MF-$0.65 HC-$6.58 Bibliographies, Data Analysis, *Educational Accountability, Educational Experiments, *Feasibility Studies, Feedback, *Incentive Systems, Input Output Analysis, Learning Theories, Literature Reviews, *Motivation, Multiple Regression Analysis, Performance Contracts, *Reinforcement, Social Reinforcement This document reports the results of a 6-month investigation into the possibility of instituting operational incentive systems in schools. An experiment is suggested that would examine the effects of a wide range of monetary and nonmonetary rewards on students, teachers, administrators, and parents based on demonstrated gains in student performance objectives in reading and mathematics. Considerable attention is focused on the collection of process and output information and the suggested use of existing school records, self-report instruments, indepth interviews, behavioral observations, and functionallevel paper and pencil tests. The basic structure of a multiyear experimental program encompassing several sites is presented, with suggestions for potential local, State, and Federal funding. Appendixes include documentation of the EZ Sort files, documentation of several current projects that make use of incentives to students, and letters of interest from school districts that were contacted as part of the feasibility study. TL;DR: In the field of scientific knowledge, truth can be defined exactly by mathematical methods (topology) provided there is a certain interaction between theories and experiments as mentioned in this paper, which is not always the case.

TL;DR: In the first English and American editions (1903) of George Moore's The Untllled Field, the last two stories, ''In the Clay'' and ''The Way Back'' were conceived and written as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: In the first English and American editions (1903) of George Moore's The. Untllled Field. \"In the Clay» begins the collection and \"The Way Back\" ends it. And though eleven other stories are placed between them, the events in these two are consecutive and their casts of characters are practically the same. Together with \"The Wild Goose,\" they were the last stories in the collection to be conceived and written.1 Undoubtedly Moore intended the two to be \"envelope\" stories to envelop the themes of the other stories and \"round out\" the collection.2 \"In the Clay\" concerns a sculptor who exiles himself from his native Ireland, and \"The Way Back\" concerns a painter^ who returns to it. Both stories are about an artist's attempt to deal with Irish material itself.
