Abstract: This book presents compelling arguments for the concept of theatre as a coherent and internally consistent model for understanding organizational behaviour. It spells out the full dimensions of such a model, tracing the historical and contemporary roots and extent of more partial efforts to use the same model. The major part of the volume illustrates the application of this model to the decision-making conduct of senior executives in enterprises. The data from the theatre and organizations is particularly rich and unusual in resulting from first-hand observation of situations rarely open to social scientists. Students, researchers and consultants in the field of organizational behaviour will find here a fresh and powerful framework for analysis, and a wealth of perceptive insights into organizations.

Abstract: Could the natives of a temperate climate colonize and increase in a tropical country and vice versa?" "Can Europeans become acclimatized in tropical Africa?" "Is the colonization of tropical Africa by Europeans possible?" "Can the white race become acclimatized in the tropics?"! These questions the titles of articles published in a variety of scholarly journals serve to introduce a subject that engaged the attention of many geographers and medical practitioners throughout the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century, namely, the possibility of human acclimatization. It was a topic that was widely discussed during the period, and yet for all the attention and publicity it received at the time, not to mention the diverse reactions it provoked, it has been almost totally ignored by historians of geographical thought. Even when it does surface in their writings, as with T. W. Freeman, little is said beyond the observation that "such questions as the way of life of European settlers in the tropics and their powers of acclimatization are of considerable interest". This conspicuous omission is doubly unfortunate, firstly, because the problems of human acclimatization were so widely debated in science, and secondly, because the questions it raises intersect intellectually, institutionally and ideologically with a range of important topics in the history of science more generally. For these reasons alone a contextual reading of this theory is crucial, and all the more so because so few problems in the history of human geography have been contextually interrogated by the discipline's historians,' and because the more specificdebates about human acclimatization cannot be divorced from theories about acclimatization in general.

Abstract: This paper is a discussion of Pierre Bourdieu's sociology, with emphasis on his theory of symbolic violence. Using Sylvain Maresca's work on delegation and representation among the French peasantry as an empirical illustration, I examine Bourdieu's key concepts (capital, field, habitus, symbolic power), his approach to social organisation and dynamics (social space, strategies of conversion and reproduction), and map out the basic structure of his framework. Several difficulties are discussed: the closure of the conceptual system, the form of explanations, the oversight of the state, the underestimate of material determinations, and the lack of a theory of historical transformation. Having underlined the meta- theoretical grounding of his model, I conclude by arguing that Bourdieu offers the means for a dialectical transcendence of interpretive and structural sociologies.

Abstract: This book is designed to guide social workers in their work as field instructors. It is unique in that it presents a conceptual system that unites social work theory taught in the classroom to actual practice in a variety of community settings. This system gives the field instructor a model to guide the student through a process that focuses attention on common elements of all social work practice situations. Many examples are presented to illustrate the application of this process. In addition, the text incorporates current research and experience on pre-practicum preparation, the importance of the initial meeting with students, the relationship between field instructor and student, guidance and monitoring of the learning process, evaluation procedures, legal liability and ethical issues, and working with students where age, experience, gender, differing ethnicities, or the presence of a disability may need consideration. Field education is examined bearing in mind the multiple and rapidly changing contexts of social work and social welfare policies and practices, university and service organizations, and professional and legal requirements. The Practice of Field Instruction in Social Work: Theory and Process is an invaluable text for anyone preparing to become a field instructor, for current field instructors, and for faculty members responsible for field coordination. The information presented here is based on current research and teaching experience. The model presented in the book has been used with success in undergraduate and graduate programs throughout Canada and in other countries.

Abstract: many rankings of departments of economics according to the quantity of published re search of their faculties (for example, Hogan (1984), Graves, Marchand, and Thompson (1982), Niemi (1975), Moore (1973), and Siegfried (1972)). We offer new rankings that differ from those of our predecessors in sev eral respects. Most importantly, we rank de partments in individual fields within eco nomics. Employers selecting among appli cants and students choosing among graduate programs tend to be interested in particular fields within economics rather than econom ics generally. Thus, rankings by field may be more helpful than general rankings. Our rankings also differ from previous work in several other significant respects. First, our scope, in terms of time period and/ or number of journals, exceeds that of pre vious work. Second, unlike most prior work, our rankings are strictly of economics depart ments; only articles published by members of a school's economics department are counted.1 Third, also contrary to most pre vious studies, our rankings are based on the current departmental affiliations of authors, rather than those at the time of articles' pub

Abstract: While frequently invoked, the level playing field ideal and its practical embodiment in tax legislation has received relatively little analysis. This paper examines the economic arguments surrounding the level playing field doctrine. I conclude that leveling the playing field is an issue of little economic importance and that efforts to level the playing field like those recently enacted are likely to create more important nonneutralities than those they eliminate. They may however contribute to the perceived fairness of the tax system.
