TL;DR: An internal reconstruction and an immanent critique of Bourdieu's generative structuralism is presented in this paper, where an analysis of the relational logic that permeates his whole work is presented.
Abstract: An internal reconstruction and an immanent critique of Bourdieu's generative structuralism is presented. Rather than starting with the concept of “habitus,” as is usually done, the article tries to systematically reconstruct Bourdieu's theory by an analysis of the relational logic that permeates his whole work. Tracing the debt Bourdieu's approach owes to Bachelard's rationalism and Cassirer's relationalism, the article examines Bourdieu's epistemological writings of the 1960s and 70s. It tries to make the case that Bourdieu's sociological metascience represents a rationalist version of Bhaskar's critical realism, and enjoins Bourdieu to give heed to the realist turn in the philosophy of the natural and the social sciences. The article shows how Bourdieu's epistemological assumptions are reflected in his primary theoretical constructs of “habitus” and “field.” To concretize their discussion, it analyzes Bourdieu's reinterpretation of Weber in his theory of the field of religion and of the young Mannheim in his theory of the scientific field.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply the conceptual tools of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to analyse the diverse roles, and partially divergent objectives of the various institutions and individuals involved in the functions of financing, production, and consumption of health services.
Abstract: The field of health care, like all fields of social life, is a site of continuous games for power and control. This paper applies the conceptual tools of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu—in particular the notions of field and capital—to analyse the diverse roles, and partially divergent objectives of the various institutions and individuals involved in the functions of financing, production, and consumption of health services. Participants in these struggles are seen to have different chances of winning or losing, depending on their relative power, which is determined by the distribution of differently valued capitals in this specific field. The expectations associated with the transition to market based control mechanisms in the field of Finnish health care, and the experiences of those directly involved in this transition are analysed. The nature and implications of the process of transition from a planning allocation system to a competition based resource allocation system are studied on the basis of extensive interviews and observations conducted in one university hospital and two central hospitals in Finland.

TL;DR: This paper traces and explains the emergence of the mental health users movement in Great Britain, focusing specifically upon the formation of the Mental Patients Union in the early 1970s.
Abstract: This paper traces and explains the emergence of the mental health users movement in Great Britain, focusing specifically upon the formation of the Mental Patients Union in the early 1970s. The analysis presented in the paper draws, to some extent, from conventional movement theory. In addition, however, it draws from the work of Pierre Bourdieu. This represents an innovation in movement analysis and the necessity of this innovation is argued for in an early section of the paper.

TL;DR: The authors introduce Bourdieu's key theoretical concepts habitus, practice, field, and different forms of capital, such as cultural, economic, social, and symbolic, to understand the practical logic of everyday life, understand relations of power, and to develop a reflexive sociology.
Abstract: At the heart of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological studies is an integrated theoretical framework of relevance to sociologists of food and nutrition. One of Bourdieu's primary concerns is to overcome dichotomies in social theory, such as micro/macro, material/symbolic, empirical/theoretical, objective/subjective, public/private, structure/agency. His other sociological concerns are to understand the practical logic of everyday life, to understand relations of power, and to develop a reflexive sociology. The primary objective of this paper is to introduce Bourdieu's key theoretical concepts habitus, practice, field, and different forms of capital, such as cultural, economic, social, and symbolic. While gender, class, ethnicity, culture, education, and the historical time period all shape an individual's habitus, practice_what one does in everyday life_is dynamic and fluid, like a jazz musician's improvisation on a theme. Practice is the result of the relationship between an individual's habitus, different form...

Abstract: From the Publisher: A number of relatively new technologies, such as Enterprise Resource Planning systems, the Internet and intranets, have entered the organizational landscape. These technologies have not only been enabling a wide range of social and organizational transformations, but have also been challenging much of the received wisdom that operates in academic and industrial discourses. This book attempts to capture some of these strands by discussing the social and organizational issues surrounding the implementation and use of these new technologies in organizational processes. Some of the contributions are critical and reflexive by nature, while others offer rich insights through the analysis of cases. The book represents a wide scope of traditions of thought, as well as research approaches, in addressing these emerging issues.. "This book contains the selected proceedings of the International Working Conference on New Information Technologies in Organizational Processes: Field Studies and Theoretical Reflections on the Future of Work, organized by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, in August 1999.. "This title will be essential reading for researchers working in information systems and management, technology, social and organization studies.

TL;DR: This article explored factors associated with effective interorganizational relationships between a school of social work and field agencies and found that agencies with formal agreements with the university had more complex student programs and more reciprocal activities than other types of sampled organizations.
Abstract: Factors associated with effective interorganizational relationships between a school of social work and field agencies were explored in a survey of 62 randomly selected field educators. The study examined the relationships between three categories of agencies and the university on four dimensions: commitment to education; organizational supports and resources; interpersonal relations; and collaborative and reciprocal activities. Findings revealed that agencies with formal agreements with the university had more complex student programs and more reciprocal activities than other types of sampled organizations. Strengths and distinctive contributions of the different types of organizations to the university and to field education are illuminated.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore educational management studies as an intellectual field and identify its specialized discourse, the fieldv positions and their objective relations and, the location of occupants in the field.
Abstract: This article is concerned to explore educational management studies as an intellectual field. It draws on Bernstein and on Bourdieus theorization of fields to identify its specialized discourse, the fieldv positions and their objective relations and, the location of occupants in the field. The article suggests EMS is characterized by three categories of field occupants, the academic, the practitioner and the entrepreneur. It goes on to suggest that this configuration shapes the discursive features of the field. The nature of the discourse is further explored via a survey of recent articles in EMA.

Abstract: Outlining the development of even such a young field as the design of automatic word-class taggers is not an easy task.1 Different systems and approaches could be categorized in several ways, i.e. the classification given below is by no means the only known one, probably not even the most popular one. In this chapter, we will make a main distinction between the linguistic approach, based on hand-written rules, and the automatic data-driven approach.

TL;DR: In this paper, a social mapping of the field of British-Asian independent film between 1976 and 1996 is performed, which examines a series of film production contexts as a means of revealing refracted homologies between particular texts, the cultural field and the broader field of power in Britain.
Abstract: This thesis performs a social mapping of the field of British-Asian independent film between 1976 and 1996. Through a practical application of Pierre Bourdieu's methodological approach to reading cultural production, this research examines a series of film production contexts as a means of revealing refracted homologies between particular texts, the cultural field and the broader field of power in Britain. The empirical core of the thesis identifies and examines five different film practices: an excluded film practice, an institutional film practice, a theoretical film practice, a successful film practice and contemporary film practices. The selected films are primarily analysed as cultural "barometers" of the given social contexts, providing for each of the empirical chapters a basis from which to map the genesis of a particular film practice. By mapping the relations between cultural production, the key social events and forces for change as actualised within the films, each empirical chapter aims to reveal the dominant logic which informed given film practices. Ethnicity, instead of functioning as the essential object of analysis, provides this research with a starting point and the key sampling device to map the British independent film field. In principal, this thesis examines the ways in which images of "ethnic minorities" in the British independent film field have been both liberated and regulated through the presence of dominant dispositions which have structured the field generating, and consecrating particular film-making practices over and above others.

TL;DR: Berry as discussed by the authors presents a broad framework within which we can examine the current psychological research traditions on culture, revealing the diversity of the current field but also pointing to its underlying unity by showing that competing orientations can be understood within his framework.
Abstract: In the first chapter of this section, Berry presents a broad framework within which we can examine the current psychological research traditions on culture. His analysis not only reveals the diversity of the current field but also points to its underlying unity by showing that competing orientations can be understood within his framework. Questions to keep in mind while reading Berry’s chapter are as follows:

TL;DR: A selective review of some recent theoretical developments in the field of close relationships is presented in this article, where demographic developments reflecting flux in relationships and the family and what may be viewed as a revolution in gender relations and family over the past three to four decades are discussed.
Abstract: A selective review of some recent theoretical developments in the field of close relationships is presented. We describe demographic developments reflecting flux in relationships and the family and what may be viewed as a revolution in gender relations and the family over the past three to four decades. Also reviewed are theories on the development, maintenance, and ending of relationships, as well as the “dark side” of close relationships. We conclude that the close-relationships field is likely to continue to develop and prosper as people search for answers to daunting relationship problems.
