TL;DR: A partially consumable spacer ring as discussed by the authors is a cylindrical non-consumable base metal ring having an outside diameter of such a size as to snugly fit the inside diameter of the pipe end to be welded.
Abstract: A partially consumable spacer chill or welding ring includes a generally cylindrical non-consumable base metal ring having an outside diameter of such a size as to snugly fit the inside diameter of the pipe end to be welded. A circular consumable filler metal spacer ring is medially attached to the outer periphery of the base metal ring and extends peripherally radially outwardly to function as a spacing device between adjacent ends of two lengths of pipe to be joined. The consumable spacer ring may be affixed to the base metal ring in a plurality of circularly offset locations by spot welding or may be press-fitted in an alignment groove in the base ring. The consumable spacer ring becomes filler metal during welding.

TL;DR: The Si crystals which appeared at the welding seam, indicating that this element participated actively during the welding process, also contributed to the IMC layer’s formation, indicating the quality of the butt joint is better if the intermetallic layer is minimized.
Abstract: Butt joints of A5052 aluminum alloy and SS400 steel, with a new type of chamfered edge, are welded by means of metal inert gas welding and ER4043 Al-Si filler metal. The microhardness and microstructure of the joint are investigated. An intermetallic layer is found on the surface of the welding seam and SS400 steel sheet. The hardness of the intermetallic layer is examined using the Vickers hardness test. The average hardness values at the Intermetallic (IMC) layer zone and without the IMC layer zone were higher than that of the welding wire ER4043. The tensile strength test showed a fracture at the intermetallic layer when the tensile strength is 225.9 MPa. The tensile value test indicated the average of welds was equivalent to the 85% tensile strength of the A5052 aluminum alloy. The thickness of the intermetallic layers is non-uniform at different positions with the ranges from 1.95 to 5 μm. The quality of the butt joint is better if the intermetallic layer is minimized. The Si crystals which appeared at the welding seam, indicating that this element participated actively during the welding process, also contributed to the IMC layer's formation.

TL;DR: In this article, the formation of equiaxed zone (EQZ) in Al-Zn-Mg alloy welds as affected by base metal, filler metal chemistry and weld techniques is studied.
Abstract: Equiaxed zone (EQZ) formation in Al–Zn–Mg alloy welds as affected by base metal, filler metal chemistry and weld techniques is studied. Filler metal chemistry and welding techniques have great influence on the formation of EQZ microstructure as base metal composition has. In an effort to characterise the equiaxed grain zone formation in Al–Zn–Mg alloy welds two commercial Al alloys AA7018 and RDE40 were selected. Gas tungsten arc welding in continuous current, pulsed current and arc oscillation mode were applied to weld the base materials. The influence of Sc containing fillers have been studied and compared with the commercial filler material. Mechanical and metallurgical characterisation were carried out in the EQZ. Intergranular corrosion in EQZ was studied according to ASTM G 110-92. Results reveals that RDE40 with low solute contents showed wider EQZ but relatively better corrosion and mechanical properties compared to AA7018 EQZ. Gas tungsten arc welding in pulsed and arc oscillation mode fu...
