TL;DR: In this paper , a multistep in silico analysis was carried out using a selection of core enzymes from the pathway described in land plants, and the results showed that a conserved core of the pathway for PC biosynthesis is shared horizontally in all microalgae.
Abstract: Among the most relevant bioactive molecules family, phenolic compounds (PCs) are well known in higher plants, while their knowledge in microalgae is still scarce. Microalgae represent a novel and promising source of human health benefit compounds to be involved, for instance, in nutraceutical composition. This study aims to investigate the PCs biosynthetic pathway in the microalgal realm, exploring its potential variability over the microalgal biodiversity axis. A multistep in silico analysis was carried out using a selection of core enzymes from the pathway described in land plants. This study explores their presence in ten groups of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microalgae.. Analyses were carried out taking into account a wide selection of algal protein homologs, functional annotation of conserved domains and motifs, and maximum-likelihood tree construction. Results showed that a conserved core of the pathway for PCs biosynthesis is shared horizontally in all microalgae. Conversely, the ability to synthesize some subclasses of phenolics may be restricted to only some microalgal groups (i.e., Chlorophyta) depending on featured enzymes, such as the flavanone naringenin and other related chalcone isomerase dependent compounds.

TL;DR: The major crystalline components of the heartwood are found to be three iso flavanones: (i) a new compound called 9dalbergioidin9 whose constitution is established as 5,7,29,49- tetrahydroxy iso-flavanone as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The major crystalline components of the heartwood are found to be three iso flavanones: (i) a new compound called 9dalbergioidin9 whose constitution is established as 5,7,29,49- tetrahydroxy iso flavanone, (ii) a known compound, homoferreirin, and (iii) another new com pound called 4 ougenin ’ whose constitution is established as 5,29,4L trihydroxy-7miethoxy- 6 -methyKsoflavanone. The synthesis of ougenin dimethyl ether has been carried out by two methods. The biogenetic relations are discussed. Acetylation of homoferreirin at higher temperatures yields only the acetate of the enol form while at room temperature it gives a mixture of this and the normal acetate.

TL;DR: In this article, two new flavanone glycosides, Gleditsin A and B, were identified using spectroscopic analysis and chemical modification, and they significantly suppressed the growth of prostate carcinoma (DU 145) and colon colorectal adenocarcinoma (HRT-18), LS 174T, COLO 320DM) cell lines.
Abstract: Chemical investigation of Gleditsia caspia concentrate resulted in the isolation and identification of two new flavanone glycosides Gleditsin A; (2S)-5,7,4`-trihydroxyflavanone-7-O-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside [1], and Gleditsin B; (2S)-5,7,3 ` ,4 ` -tetrahydroxy-flavanone-7-O-[2,6-dimethyl-6-hydroxyl-2-trans-2,7octadienoic acid (1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranosyl ester [2], as well as two known flavanone glycosides, naringenin-7-O-glucoside [3] and eriodictyol-7-O-glucoside [4]. Structures of the new compounds were established by spectroscopic analysis and chemical modification. The cytotoxic activities (ED 50 ) of these compounds on various tumor cell lines was evaluated and both compounds [1 and 2] significantly suppressed the growth of prostate carcinoma (DU 145) and colon colorectal adenocarcinoma (HRT-18), LS 174T, COLO 320DM) cell lines.

TL;DR: Activity-guided isolation of antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant compounds from the dichloromethane extract of the aerial parts of Eriophorum scheuchzeri led to the isolation of eight flavonoids, three isoflavones and one flavanone are new natural compounds.
Abstract: Activity-guided isolation of antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant compounds from the dichloromethane extract of the aerial parts of Eriophorum scheuchzeri led to the isolation of eight flavonoids. Three isoflavones and one flavanone are new natural compounds. The isolation of the bioactive compounds was performed by centrifugal partition chromatography. Fractions and pure compounds were monitored by a direct TLC bioautographic assay. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the characteristics of the flavonoids in niihime fruit and found that they contain a comparatively high quantity of bioactive flavonoid of the rutinose sugar chain such as eriocitrin and hesperidin.
Abstract: Niihime fruit, produced in the coastal area of the Sea of Kumano in Mie prefecture, is a new sour citrus fruit. This is the first study to examine the characteristics of the flavonoids in niihime fruit. The content of flavonoids in the juice and peel of niihime fruit was determined by HPLC and their distribution was examined in comparison with seven other species of sour citrus fruits. Niihime fruit was found to contain a comparatively high quantity of bioactive flavonoids of the flavanone glycosides with rutinose sugar chain such as eriocitrin and hesperidin as well as the polymethoxyflavones such as nobiletin and tangeretin. The peel extract of niihime fruit exhibited comparatively high antioxidative activity among sour citrus fruits using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. Furthermore, the flavonoids eluted from niihime fruit by over time in hot and cold solutions of water, 5% ethanol, and 25% ethanol, which are commonly used in the field of food processing and cooking, were examined. The flavonoids eluted from niihime fruit in hot 25% ethanol solution was highest content in solutions, and the content of flavonoids eluted in 5min was an approximate half of content eluted in 60min. The flavanone glycosides, eriocitrin and hesperidin, were eluted in higher contents in hot solutions than in cold solutions. The polymethoxyflavones, nobiletin and tangeretin, were eluted to some extent in hot 5% ethanol but were found in low contents in cold solutions. The highest contents were eluted in hot 25% ethanol. The difference in the elution properties between flavanone glycosides and polymethoxyflavones is considered to be a result of their hydrophobic properties. The scavenging activity of DPPH radical for eluates was shown to increase over time, and the activity was suggested to be related to the elution content of eriocitrin, which is an antioxidant in niihime fruit. This study showed that niihime fruit contains a comparative abundance of bioactive flavonoids and these flavonoids are able to be eluted using hot solutions of water and ethanol.
