TL;DR: The role of automatic vehicle identification in fleet management, safety and law enforcement, vehicle priority schemes and route guidance systems is discussed in this paper, where optical, microwave and radio-frequency means of identification are discussed and compared.
Abstract: Considerable progress has been made in the field of automatic vehicle identification since the Smeed report on road pricing in 1964, and this article summarises the techniques and potential of automatic vehicle identification. Optical, microwave and radio-frequency means of identification are discussed and compared. A test program to compare the performance of a number of commercial systems was conducted in 1971 using an on-line real-time computer system. More than 99.5 per cent accuracy of identification was obtained throughout the tests. The role of automatic vehicle identification in fleet management, safety and law enforcement, vehicle priority schemes and route guidance systems is discussed. /TRRL/
