TL;DR: In this article, a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator driven by repetitive nanosecond pulses for high Reynolds number aerodynamic flow control was demonstrated at various post-stall angles of attack for Mach numbers up to 0.26 (free stream velocity up to 93 m/s).
Abstract: This work continues an ongoing effort aimed at development and use of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators driven by repetitive nanosecond pulses for high Reynolds number aerodynamic flow control. These actuators are believed to influence the flow via a thermal mechanism which is fundamentally different from more commonly studied AC-DBD actuators. Leading edge separation control on an 8-inch chord NACA 0015 airfoil is demonstrated at various post-stall angles of attack for Mach numbers up to 0.26 (free stream velocity up to 93 m/s) and Reynolds numbers up to 1.15 X 106. The nanosecond (NS) pulse driven DBD is shown to extend the stall angle at low Reynolds numbers by functioning as an active trip. At post-stall angles of attack, the device is shown to excite shear layer instabilities and generate coherent spanwise vortices that transfer momentum from the freestream to the separated region, thus reattaching the flow. This is observed for all high Reynolds numbers and Mach numbers spanning th...

TL;DR: In this article, experimental studies of Reynolds number effects on a turbulent boundary layer with separation, reattachment, and recovery were conducted. And they showed that the mean flow is at most a very weak function of the Reynolds number while turbulence quantities strongly depend on Reynolds number.
Abstract: The present paper addresses experimental studies of Reynolds number effects on a turbulent boundary layer with separation, reattachment, and recovery. A momentum thickness Reynolds number varies from 1,100 to 20,100 with a wind tunnel enclosed in a pressure vessel by varying the air density and wind tunnel speed. A custom-built, high-resolution laser Doppler anemometer provides fully resolved turbulence measurements over the full Reynolds number range. The experiments show that the mean flow is at most a very weak function of Reynolds number while turbulence quantities strongly depend on Reynolds number. Roller vortices are generated in the separated shear layer caused by the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. Empirical Reynolds number scalings for the mean velocity and Reynolds stresses are proposed for the upstream boundary layer, the separated region, and the recovery region. The inflectional instability plays a critical role in the scaling in the separated region. The near-wall flow recovers quickly downstream of reattachment even if the outer layer is far from an equilibrium state. As a result, a stress equilibrium layer where a flat-plate boundary layer scaling is valid develops in the recovery region and grows outward moving downstream.

TL;DR: In this article, the full elliptic forms of the Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved using novel inlet flow boundary conditions, and the results cast doubt on the validity of previous elliptic solutions.
Abstract: Steady two-dimensional laminar free convection between isothermal vertical plates including entrance flow effects has been numerically investigated. The full elliptic forms of the Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved using novel inlet flow boundary conditions. Results are presented for Prandtl number Pr = 0.7, Grashof number range 50 {le} Gr{sub b} {le} 5 {times} 10{sup 4}, and channel aspect ratios of L/b = 10, 17, 24. New phenomena, such as inlet flow separation, have been observed. The results cast doubt on the validity of previous elliptic solutions. Comparisons with the approximate boundary-layer results show that a full elliptic solution is necessary to get accurate local quantities near the channel entrance.

TL;DR: In this article, a dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator at a low Reynolds number is used for separation control of a NACA 0015 airfoil at a Reynolds number of 63,000.
Abstract: Large-eddy simulations have been conducted to investigate the mechanisms of separated-flow control using a dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator at a low Reynolds number. In the present study, the mechanisms are classified according to the means of momentum injection to the boundary layer. The separated flow around the NACA 0015 airfoil at a Reynolds number of 63 000 is used as the base flow for separation control. Both normal and burst mode actuations are adopted in separation control. The burst frequency non-dimensionalized by the freestream velocity and the chord length (F+) is varied from 0.25 to 25, and we discuss the control mechanism through the comparison of the aerodynamic performance and controlled flow-fields in each normal and burst case. Lift and drag coefficients are significantly improved for the cases of F+ = 1, 5, and 15 due to flow reattachment associated with a laminar-separation bubble. Frequency and linear stability analyses indicate that the F+ = 5 and 15 cases effectively exc...
