TL;DR: It is suggested that in the flying squirrel the maturation of spermatozoa is accompanied by changes in their cohesive properties.
Abstract: In the upper caput epididymidis of Glaucomys volans, where epithelial cells have a high concentration of RNA in their apical cyto¬ plasm, spermatozoa form long cylindrical bodies. Spermatozoan tails, adhering together, fill the interior of the cylinder. Their heads, with closely attached cytoplasmic droplets, are regularly arranged on the periphery of the cylinder with acrosomes facing the epididymal epithe¬ lium. In subsequent segments of the epididymis, the cylindrical bodies become more compact and the sperm heads are drawn together in rouleaux. In the lower caput epididymidis, cylindrical bodies fragment and masses of individual spermatozoa or spermatozoa grouped in rouleaux fill the lumina of the duct. It is suggested that in the flying squirrel the maturation of spermatozoa is accompanied by changes in their cohesive properties.

TL;DR: The high differentiation between sampling sites indicates that the actual gene flow over large distances is low, and emphasizes the importance of landscape-level management in the conservation of the flying squirrel.
Abstract: The Siberian flying squirrel (Pteromys volans) is an arboreal rodent that inhabits spruce-dominated boreal forest. The species has declined in Finland, probably due to modern forestry. We studied genetic variation in the flying squirrel (n = 159) between eight sampling sites in Finland using seven microsatellite loci. Heterozygosity levels were similar in the flying squirrel as found for other Sciurid species. There were slight heterozygote excesses over all loci. Isolation by distance was clear and genetic differentiation between sampling sites was high (overall F S T = 0.115). In addition, geographical isolation of one site was observed as increased differentiation and low allele richness. Radio telemetry studies have revealed that the dispersal abilities of flying squirrels are good. However, the high differentiation between sampling sites indicates that the actual gene flow over large distances is low. Thus our results emphasize the importance of landscape-level management in the conservation of the flying squirrel.

TL;DR: This species is a seasonal breeder with low reproductive rates, which may be a result of a low predation rate combined with their high degree of folivory.
Abstract: Reproductive characteristics of red-giant flying squirrels ( Petauristapetaurista ) were studied from December 1981 to November 1982 in Taiwan. We collected 216 adults (116 males, 100 females) and 65 immatures (23 males, 42 females). The sex ratio of adults did not deviate from 1:1 ratio ( P > 0.05). Adult females tended to be heavier than adult males (1,334 and 1,260 g, respectively, P 56 g. This species is a seasonal breeder with low reproductive rates, which may be a result of a low predation rate combined with their high degree of folivory.
