TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate the localization of chemical functionality at the entrance of single nanopores for the first time by using the controlled growth of an oxide ring, which can be further functionalized with DNA probes via silane chemistry.
Abstract: We demonstrate the localization of chemical functionality at the entrance of single nanopores for the first time by using the controlled growth of an oxide ring. Nanopores were fabricated by Focused Ion Beam machining on silicon platforms, locally derivatized by ion beam assisted oxide deposition, and further functionalized with DNA probes via silane chemistry. Ionic current recorded through single nanopores at various stages of the fabrication process demonstrated that the apertures can be locally functionalized with DNA probes. Future applications for this functional platform include the selective detection of biological organisms and molecules by ionic current blockade measurements.

TL;DR: Tensile experiments on Ni80P20 metallic glass samples fabricated via a templated electroplating process and via focused ion beam milling suggest that the transition from brittle to ductile behavior isdriven by sample size, while the extent of ductility is driven by surface state.
Abstract: We report tensile experiments on Ni80P20 metallic glass samples fabricated via a templated electroplating process and via focused ion beam milling, which differed only in their surface energy states: Ga-ion-irradiated and as-electroplated. Molecular dynamics simulations on similar Ni80Al20 systems corroborate the experimental results, which suggest that the transition from brittle to ductile behavior is driven by sample size, while the extent of ductility is driven by surface state.

TL;DR: An all-silica first-order fiber Bragg grating for high temperature sensing by focused ion beam (FIB) machining in a fiber probe tapered to a point shows a temperature sensitivity of nearly 20 pm/°C near the resonant wavelength of 1550 nm.
Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate an all-silica first-order fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for high temperature sensing by focused ion beam (FIB) machining in a fiber probe tapered to a point. This 61-period FBG is compact (~36.6 μm long and ~6.5 μm in diameter) with 200-nm-deep shallow grooves. We have tested the sensor from room temperature to around 500 °C and it shows a temperature sensitivity of nearly 20 pm/°C near the resonant wavelength of 1550 nm. This kind of sensor takes up little space because of its unique geometry and small size and may be integrated in devices that work in harsh environment or for detecting small objects.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the on-demand dispensing of single liquid droplets with volumes down to a few attoliters and submicrometric spacing using a standard atomic force microscope probe, with a 200nm aperture at the tip apex.
Abstract: In this letter, we describe the on-demand dispensing of single liquid droplets with volumes down to a few attoliters and submicrometric spacing. This dispensing is achieved using a standard atomic force microscope probe, with a 200nm aperture at the tip apex, opened by focused ion beam milling. The inside of the tip is used as reservoir for the liquid. This maskless dispensing, realized in ambient environment, permits the direct creation of droplet arrays. Nanoparticles, suspended in the liquid, were organized on a surface.
