Abstract: Transition metal chalcogenides, especially molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), have recently attracted wide attention from researchers as graphene-analogous materials. However, until now, little literature has reported the synthesis of photoluminescent MoS2 materials and their applications in analytical chemistry. We herein presented a facile bottom-up hydrothermal route for the synthesis of photoluminescent MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) by using sodium molybdate and cysteine as precursors. The prepared MoS2 QDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and UV–vis spectroscopy. The MoS2 QDs were then used as photoluminescent probes to construct a photoluminescence (PL) quenching sensor for detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). Abstract: Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) obtained by disintegration of bleached softwood sulphite pulp in a homogenizer, was hydrophobically modified by surface silylation with chlorodimethyl isopropylsilane (CDMIPS). The silylated MFC was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and white light interferometry (WLI). The degree of surface substitution (DSS) was determined using Si concentrations from XPS survey scans, as well as deconvoluted peaks in high-resolution C1s XPS spectra. The DSS values obtained by the two methods were found to be in good agreement. MFC with DSS between 0.6 and 1 could be dispersed in a non-flocculating manner into non-polar solvents, TEM observations showing that the material had kept its initial morphological integrity. However, when CDMIPS in excess of 5 mol CDMIPS/glucose unit in the MFC was used, partial solubilization of the MFC occurred, resulting in a drop in the observed DSS and a loss of the microfibrillar character of the material. The wetting properties of films cast from suspension of the silylated MFC were also investigated. The contact angles of water on the films increased with increasing DSS of the MFC, approaching the contact angles observed on super hydrophobic surfaces for the MFC with the highest degree of substitution. This is believed to originate from a combination of low surface energy and surface microstructure in the films.

Abstract: It is well known that arsenite [As(III)] is less effectively removed than arsenate [As(V)] by most treatment technologies Thus, pre-oxidation of As(III) to As(V) is required prior to adsorption Here, the oxidation properties of manganese oxides with adsorption features of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been combined in a composite of MWCNT/MnO2 The composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) In batch culture experiments, MWCNTs and the MWCNT/MnO2 composite were examined for As(III) and As(V) The results reveal that MnO2 in the composite plays a key role in enhancing As(III) removal and As(III) removal is not as effective as As(V) removal for MWCNTs The retention of arsenite and arsenate is slightly pH dependent The reported composite can be regenerated as it was confirmed by SEM and EDX analysis The study could be considered as a model of preparation and investigation of a multifunctional material that can be used in wastewater treatment for removal of arsenic

Abstract: The effect of hydrogen bonding on the phase behavior of a chemically similar polyurethane and polyurea and their blends with poly(ethylene glycol) is examined. The polyurethane and polyurea were synthesized from the same diisocyanate, 1,5-diisocyanato-2-methylpentane, using an aromatic diol and aromatic diamine, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the distribution of hydrogen bonds in these polymers and their blends. The distribution of hydrogen bonds in the polyurethane homopolymer was found to be quite similar to that found in an amorphous polyurethane studied previously in this laboratory. However, upon annealing, some sort of ordered structure was detected spectroscopically. The polyurea formed an equivalent ordered structure much more readily at room temperature. Ordered hydrogen-bonded domains were also detected in the spectra of the blends, either after an extended time at room temperature or after annealing at an elevated temperature.
