TL;DR: From the Publisher: Architecture and CAD for Deep-Submicron FPGAs addresses several key issues in the design of high-performance FPGA architectures and CAD tools, with particular emphasis on issues that are important for FPG as implemented in deep-submicron processes.
Abstract: From the Publisher: Architecture and CAD for Deep-Submicron FPGAs addresses several key issues in the design of high-performance FPGA architectures and CAD tools, with particular emphasis on issues that are important for FPGAs implemented in deep-submicron processes. Three factors combine to determine the performance of an FPGA: the quality of the CAD tools used to map circuits into the FPGA, the quality of the FPGA architecture, and the electrical (i.e. transistor-level) design of the FPGA. Architecture and CAD for Deep-Submicron FPGAs examines all three of these issues in concert.

TL;DR: This paper reviews the state of the art of field- programmable gate array (FPGA) design methodologies with a focus on industrial control system applications and presents three main design rules, algorithm refinement, modularity, and systematic search for the best compromise between the control performance and the architectural constraints.
Abstract: This paper reviews the state of the art of field- programmable gate array (FPGA) design methodologies with a focus on industrial control system applications. This paper starts with an overview of FPGA technology development, followed by a presentation of design methodologies, development tools and relevant CAD environments, including the use of portable hardware description languages and system level programming/design tools. They enable a holistic functional approach with the major advantage of setting up a unique modeling and evaluation environment for complete industrial electronics systems. Three main design rules are then presented. These are algorithm refinement, modularity, and systematic search for the best compromise between the control performance and the architectural constraints. An overview of contributions and limits of FPGAs is also given, followed by a short survey of FPGA-based intelligent controllers for modern industrial systems. Finally, two complete and timely case studies are presented to illustrate the benefits of an FPGA implementation when using the proposed system modeling and design methodology. These consist of the direct torque control for induction motor drives and the control of a diesel-driven synchronous stand-alone generator with the help of fuzzy logic.

TL;DR: A novel design methodology to implement a secure DPA resistant crypto processor that combines standard building blocks to make 'new' compound standard cells, which have a close to constant power consumption.
Abstract: This paper describes a novel design methodology to implement a secure DPA resistant crypto processor. The methodology is suitable for integration in a common automated standard cell ASIC or FPGA design flow. The technique combines standard building blocks to make 'new' compound standard cells, which have a close to constant power consumption. Experimental results indicate a 50 times reduction in the power consumption fluctuations.

TL;DR: The architecture of a time-multiplexed FPGA is described, which includes extensions for dealing with state saving and forwarding and for increased routing demand due to time- multiplexing the hardware.
Abstract: This paper describes the architecture of a time-multiplexed FPGA. Eight configurations of the FPGA are stored in on-chip memory. This inactive on-chip memory is distributed around the chip, and accessible so that the entire configuration of the FPGA can be changed in a single cycle of the memory. The entire configuration of the FPGA can be loaded from this on-chip memory in 30 ns. Inactive memory is accessible as block RAM for applications. The FPGA is based on the Xilinx XC4000E FPGA, and includes extensions for dealing with state saving and forwarding and for increased routing demand due to time-multiplexing the hardware.

TL;DR: A new hybrid ASIC/FPGA chip architecture that is being developed in collaboration between IBM and Xilinx is introduced, and some of the design challenges this offers for designers and CAD developers are highlighted.
Abstract: This paper introduces a new hybrid ASIC/FPGA chip architecture that is being developed in collaboration between IBM and Xilinx, and highlights some of the design challenges this offers for designers and CAD developers. We review recent data from both the ASIC and FPGA industries, including technology features, and trends in usage and costs. This background data indicates that there are advantages to using standard ASICs and FPGAs for many applications, but technical and financial considerations are increasingly driving the need for a hybrid ASIC/FPGA architecture at specific volume tiers and technology nodes. As we describe the hybrid chip architecture ,we point out evolving tool and methodology issues that will need to be addressed to enable customers to effectively design hybrid ASIC/FPGAs. The discussion highlights specific automation issues in the areas of logic partitioning, logic simulation, verification, timing, layout and test.
