TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the room-temperature fatigue crack-growth characteristics of shape-memory NiTi matrix composites reinforced with 10 and 20 vol.% of TiC particles.
Abstract: An experimental study was conducted to examine the room-temperature fatigue crack-growth characteristics of shape-memory NiTi matrix composites reinforced with 10 and 20 vol.% of TiC particles. Microstructural characterization of these hot-isostatically-pressed materials shows that the TiC particles do not react with the NiTi matrix and that they lack any texture. Overall fatigue crack-growth characteristics were found to be similar for the unreinforced and reinforced materials. However, a slight increase in the threshold for fatigue crack initiation was noted for the composites. The fracture toughness, as indicated by the failure stress intensity factor range, was found to be similar for all materials. Neutron diffraction studies near the crack-tip of the loaded fracture NiTi specimen detected no significant development of texture at the crack-tip. These results are explained by recourse to fractographic observations. Finally, a comparison is made between the micromechanisms of fracture of metal matrix composites, which deform by dislocation plasticity, and those of the present NiTi–TiC composites, which deform additionally by twinning.

TL;DR: In this paper, the fracture toughness of hot-pressed alumina and SiC-whisker composite was measured by four-point bending on single-edge precracked bend bars having sharp precracks created by bridge indentation.
Abstract: The fracture toughness of a hot-pressed alumina and that of a hot-pressed alumina/SiC-whisker composite containing 33 vol% SiC whiskers were measured by four-point bending on single-edge precracked bend bars having sharp precracks created by bridge indentation. Two batches of the composite were examined, one exhibiting a greater degree of whisker clustering than the other. The fracture toughness of the alumina was around 4 MN[center dot]m[sup [minus]3/2] whereas that of the composite varied between 5 and 8 MN[center dot]m[sup [minus]3/2] depending on microstructural uniformity and crack-propagation direction. Crack deflection in combination with a change in fracture from intergranular to transgranular fracture is proposed as an explanation of the superior fracture toughness of SiC-whisker-reinforced alumina as compared to unreinforced alumina. The composite exhibited a variation in fracture toughness with the crack-propagation direction in identical crack planes. This effect could with good accuracy be described in terms of crack deflection for the composite with uniform whisker distribution. However, in the material with whisker clustering the variation of the fracture toughness with crack-growth direction was greater and could not entirely by explained by crack deflection.

TL;DR: In this article, the in-plane and out-of-plane mechanical behavior of both ultrasonically spot-welded and mechanically fastened joints was investigated by double-lap shear and pull-through tests, respectively.
Abstract: The in-plane and out-of-plane mechanical behaviour of both ultrasonically spot-welded and mechanically fastened joints was investigated by double-lap shear and pull-through tests, respectively. Spot-welded specimens showed comparable onset failure load and significantly higher joint stiffness compared to mechanical fasteners when carrying shear load. The failure modes and the damage within specimens were analysed after mechanical tests. Intralaminar failure and very limited damage on the out-most ply were found for welded specimens, whereas catastrophic through-the-thickness failure was observed for mechanically fastened joints. Based on the experimental outcomes, the mechanical performance and failure mechanisms of spot-welded joints were critically assessed in comparison to the mechanical fasteners .

TL;DR: In this paper, the fracture property of 21-nm TiO2-nanoparticle filled polyamide 66 was studied based on the essential work of fracture method, in which the resistance to crack initiation, wini, and the resilience to crack propagation, wprop, were applied.
