Abstract: Two tradeoffs in the effectiveness of automatic voltage regulators (AVRs) and power system stabilizers (PSSs) are investigated together for the first time. The first is the effect of a high-gain fast response AVR on decreasing power system oscillation stability as well as increasing transient stability, and vice versa. The second is that a PSS can reduce transient stability by overriding the voltage signal to the exciter as well as increasing oscillation stability, and vice versa. In essence, the actions of the AVR and PSS devices are dynamically interlinked. A novel Bode frequency response framework for dynamic analysis of AVR and PSS performance and tradeoffs is presented. Bode frequency response also assists with the determination of suitable generator locations for PSSs and the assessment of robustness under changing power system operating conditions.

Abstract: Adaptive compressive gain and level dependent spectral shaping circuitry for a hearing aid include a microphone to produce an input signal and a plurality of channels connected to a common circuit output. Each channel has a preset frequency response. Each channel includes a filter with a preset frequency response to receive the input signal and to produce a filtered signal, a channel amplifier to amplify the filtered signal to produce a channel output signal, a threshold register to establish a channel threshold level, and a gain circuit. The gain circuit increases the gain of the channel amplifier when the channel output signal falls below the channel threshold level and decreases the gain of the channel amplifier when the channel output signal rises above the channel threshold level. A transducer produces sound in response to the signal passed by the common circuit output.

Abstract: A new wideband open-loop active harmonic load-pull measurement approach is presented. The proposed method is based on wideband data-acquisition and wideband signal-injection of the incident and device generated power waves at the frequencies of interest. The system provides full, user defined, in-band control of the source and load reflection coefficients presented to the device-under-test at baseband, fundamental and harmonic frequencies. The system capability to completely eliminate electrical delay allows to mimic realistic matching networks using their measured or simulated frequency response. This feature enables active devices to be evaluated for their actual in-circuit behavior, even on wafer. Moreover the proposed setup provides the unique feature of handling realistic wideband communication signals like multicarrier wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA), making the setup perfectly suited for studying device performance in terms of efficiency, linearity and memory effects.

Abstract: Phase-encoded optical sampling allows radio-frequency and microwave signals to be directly down-converted and digitized with high linearity and greater than 60-dB (10-effective-bit) signal-to-noise ratio. Wide-band electrical signals can be processed using relatively low optical sampling rates provided that the instantaneous signal bandwidth is less than the Nyquist sampling bandwidth. We demonstrate the capabilities of this technique by using a 60-MS/s system to down-sample two different FM chirp signals: 1) a baseband (0-250 MHz) linear-chirp waveform and 2) a nonlinear-chirp waveform having a 10-GHz center frequency and a frequency excursion of 1 GHz. We characterize the frequency response of the technique and quantify the analog bandwidth limitation due to the optical pulse width. The 3-dB bandwidth imposed by a 30-ps sampling pulse is shown to be 10.4 GHz. We also investigate the impact of the pulse width on the linearity of the phase-encoded optical sampling technique when it is used to sample high-frequency signals.
