TL;DR: A computationally simple yet powerful method for distinguishing metal and dielectric material surfaces from the polarization characteristics of specularly reflected light is introduced, and results axiomatically from the Fresnel reflectance model are presented.
Abstract: A computationally simple yet powerful method for distinguishing metal and dielectric material surfaces from the polarization characteristics of specularly reflected light is introduced. The method is completely passive, requiring only the sensing of transmitted radiance of reflected light through a polarizing filter positioned in multiple orientations in front of a camera sensor. Precise positioning of lighting is not required. An advantage of using a polarization-based method for material classification is its immunity to color variations, which so commonly exist on uniform material samples. A simple polarization-reflectance model, called the Fresnel reflectance model, is developed. The fundamental assumptions are that the diffuse component of reflection is completely unpolarized and that the polarization state of the specular component of reflection is dictated by the Fresnel reflection coefficients. The material classification method presented results axiomatically from the Fresnel reflectance model, by estimating the polarization Fresnel ratio. No assumptions are required about the functional form of the diffuse and specular components of reflection. The method is demonstrated on some common objects consisting of metal and dielectric parts. >

TL;DR: A straightforward generalization of the proper diffusion boundary conditions is presented that takes into account Fresnel reflection and a generalized interface condition is derived to replace the usual condition of continuity of intensity.
Abstract: In connection with recent work on remote imaging of random media by light, a straightforward generalization of the proper diffusion boundary conditions is presented that takes into account Fresnel reflection. The Milne problem at exterior boundaries is solved for various values of index of refraction, absorption, and scattering anisotropy parameters to yield extrapolated end points and extrapolation distances. A generalized interface condition is derived to replace the usual condition of continuity of intensity. Benchmark-quality numerical results are given for the extrapolation distance and for the new index-dependent parameter in the interface conditions. Difficulties in using the extrapolated end point when the index is sufficiently large are discussed, and a new image procedure suitable for this case is presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, an extended Jones matrix method is derived for treating the transmission of off-axis light through birefringent networks, which includes the effect of Fresnel reflection and refraction at the crystal-plate surfaces.
Abstract: An extended Jones matrix method is derived for treating the transmission of off-axis light through birefringent networks. Neglecting multiple reflections, this matrix algebra includes the effect of Fresnel reflection and refraction at the crystal-plate surfaces.

TL;DR: In this article, an optimal Klopfenstein tapered 2D subwavelength grating is designed to reduce the Fresnel reflections by 20 dB over a broad band from an air-substrate (ns = 3.0) interface.
Abstract: Techniques for the design of continuously tapered two-dimensional (2D) subwavelength surface-relief grating structures for broadband antireflection surfaces are investigated. It has been determined that the Klopfenstein taper [ Proc. IRE44, 31 ( 1956)] produces the optimum graded-index profile with the smallest depth for any specified minimum reflectance. A technique is developed to design the equivalent tapered subwavelength surface-relief grating structure by use of 2D effective-medium theory. An optimal Klopfenstein tapered 2D subwavelength grating is designed to reduce the Fresnel reflections by 20 dB over a broad band from an air–substrate (ns = 3.0) interface. The performance is verified by use of both a 2D effective-medium-theory simulation algorithm and rigorous coupled-wave analysis. These structures are also shown to achieve this low reflectance over a wide field of view (θFOV > 110°). The pyramidal spatial profile, which has generally been assumed to produce the optimal broadband antireflection grating structure, is shown to require a significantly larger depth to achieve the same performance as a Klopfenstein-designed tapered antireflection grating structure.

TL;DR: Experimental results are presented that illustrate that the technique is accurate near object limbs, as the theory predicts, with less precise, but still useful, results elsewhere.
Abstract: When unpolarized light is reflected from a smooth dielectric surface, it becomes partially polarized. This is due to the orientation of dipoles induced in the reflecting medium and applies to both specular and diffuse reflection. This paper is concerned with exploiting polarization by surface reflection, using images of smooth dielectric objects, to recover surface normals and, hence, height. This paper presents the underlying physics of polarization by reflection, starting with the Fresnel equations. These equations are used to interpret images taken with a linear polarizer and digital camera, revealing the shape of the objects. Experimental results are presented that illustrate that the technique is accurate near object limbs, as the theory predicts, with less precise, but still useful, results elsewhere. A detailed analysis of the accuracy of the technique for a variety of materials is presented. A method for estimating refractive indices using a laser and linear polarizer is also given.
