TL;DR: Numerical results show that hollow beams can be generated and can also be controlled by the number of the zones and the topological charge, which implies the potential applications of such kind of zone plate in trapping and manipulating particles.
Abstract: Focusing properties of Fresnel zone plates with spiral phase with integer and fractional topological charges illuminated by plane wave are studied. Numerical results show that hollow beams can be generated and can also be controlled by the number of the zones and the topological charge, which implies the potential applications of such kind of zone plate in trapping and manipulating particles.

TL;DR: In this article, a ray time-delay tomography based on a Bayesian inversion formulation is proposed to reconstruct the sound-speed variations in the waveguide using two vertical coplanar densely sampled source and receive arrays.
Abstract: Recent shallow-water experiments in sea channels have been performed using two vertical coplanar densely sampled source and receive arrays. Applying a double-beamforming algorithm on the two arrays both on synthetic numerical simulations and on experimental data sets, we extract efficiently source and receive angles as well as travel times for a large number of acoustic rays that propagate and bounce in the shallow-water waveguide. We then investigate how well sound-speed variations in the waveguide are reconstructed using a ray time-delay tomography based on a Bayesian inversion formulation. We introduce both data and model covariance matrices and we discuss on the synthetic numerical example how to choose the a priori information on the sound-speed covariance matrix. We attribute the partial sound-speed reconstruction to the ray-based tomography and we suggest that finite-frequency effects should be considered as the vertical and horizontal size of the Fresnel zone significantly spreads in the waveguide. Finally, the contribution of a different set of ray angles for tomography goal is also presented.

TL;DR: A theoretical analysis based on scalar diffraction theory about the recently reported focal-shift phenomena in planar metallic nanoslit lenses is presented and an axial intensity formula is obtained, which is used to analyze the focal performance in the far field zone of lens.
Abstract: A theoretical analysis based on scalar diffraction theory about the recently reported focal-shift phenomena in planar metallic nanoslit lenses is presented. Under Fresnel approximation, an axial intensity formula is obtained, which is used to analyze the focal performance in the far field zone of lens. The relative focal shift is totally dependent on the Fresnel number only. The influences of the lens size, preset focal length and incident wavelength can be attributed to the change of Fresnel number. The total phase difference of the lens is approximately equal to the Fresnel number multiplied by π. Numerical simulations performed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and near-far field transformation method are in agreement with the theoretical analysis. Using the theoretical formula assisted by simple numerical method, we provide predictions on the focal shift for the previous literatures.

TL;DR: Infrared imaging of the structures reveals a tight focusing for both structures with a maximum local intensity increase by a factor of 2.5 for a concentrator volume of 1.5 λ3, slightly limited by the residual absorption of the selected polymer.
Abstract: We report on the realization of functional infrared light concentrators based on a thick layer of air-polymer metamaterial with controlled pore size gradients. The design features an optimum gradient index profile leading to light focusing in the Fresnel zone of the structures for two selected operating wavelength domains near 5.6 and 10.4 μm. The metamaterial which consists in a thick polymer containing air holes with diameters ranging from λ/20 to λ/8 is made using a 3D lithography technique based on the two-photon polymerization of a homemade photopolymer. Infrared imaging of the structures reveals a tight focusing for both structures with a maximum local intensity increase by a factor of 2.5 for a concentrator volume of 1.5 λ3, slightly limited by the residual absorption of the selected polymer. Such porous and flat metamaterial structures offer interesting perspectives to increase infrared detector performance at the pixel level for imaging or sensing applications.
