TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the literature, technical reports and patents to propose some possible paths for the advancement of frugal innovation, and argue that research for the modification of the technological matrix of products, processes and organizational arrangements and the development of a better understanding of the Frugal entrepreneur may be key roles for developed countries to contribute to the development.
Abstract: Frugal innovation is no longer relevant only for emerging countries or for low-tech artifacts. The interest of countries developed by frugal innovation has been increasing in recent years, since it is an alternative of less use of natural and financial resources, however, it is not clear which is the role of developed countries in the advancement of frugal innovation. In this article, we examine the literature, technical reports and patents to propose some possible paths. Through qualitative methods such as semantic analysis, we argue that research for the modification of the technological matrix of products, processes and organizational arrangements and the development of a better understanding of the frugal entrepreneur may be key roles for developed countries to contribute to the development of frugal innovation.

TL;DR: A conceptual model of understanding sustainability through frugal innovation by combining ideas from these fields and basing the model on the spiritualistic perspective of Indian wisdom is presented in this article, where case study methodology is adopted to substantiate the above conceptual model.
Abstract: Today, the entire world is on the brink of disaster. The waves of crises like global warming, climate change, financial crisis, mental traumas, and tensions are engulfing mankind. Many business strategies are being discussed with sustainability as the watch word. In this context, the age-old Indian wisdom has much to offer. The gap between the haves and have-nots is on the rise. Affordability of many products is becoming a distant dream for the common man. To cater to the needs and wants of the contemporary world, firms have to adopt frugal innovation to produce low-cost and high-quality sustainable products/services. The aim of this paper was to create a conceptual model of understanding sustainability through frugal innovation by combining ideas from these fields and basing the model on the spiritualistic perspective of Indian wisdom. The case study methodology was adopted to substantiate the above conceptual model.

TL;DR: In this article, it is argued that emerging markets will increasingly bring about more advanced and high-end products due to the R&D and innovation assets and resources put in place in situ and a growing sophistication and purchasing power of the (middle class) consumer groups in these markets.
Abstract: The interest of firms in emerging economies has until date been largely an issue of exploiting low production cost possibilities and growing sales potentials. More and more, however, their interest can also be explained from an innovation and product development perspective. I.e., from a reverse innovation point-of-view where new products from emerging economies can be trickled up to satisfy the needs of more demanding customers, be they from emerging countries as well or from developed companies. Whereas reverse innovation has largely been identified with frugal innovation, in this paper it is argued that emerging markets will increasingly bring about more advanced and high end products. Both due to the R&D and innovation assets and resources put in place in situ and a growing sophistication and purchasing power of the (middle class) consumer groups in these markets.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated five business models for frugal innovation in the context of the medical equipment market in emerging economies and found that there exists an overarching frugality business logic, based on which firms can establish different business models.
Abstract: Frugal Innovation is an extreme case of innovation: radically new applications are innovated for an environment of extreme resource and cost constraints. While the phenomenon of frugal innovation has been described from a product perspective, very little is known about how firms organize frugal innovation on a business model level. This study is based on a multiple case study approach investigating five business models for frugal innovation in the context of the medical equipment market in emerging economies. We find that there exists an overarching frugal business logic, based on which firms can establish different business models.
