TL;DR: Results show that Frugality can become an element of OI by pushing the team towards basic functionality and minimal features of the solutions and low-cost implementation and Designing, in parallel with the solution, an ‘implementation network’, with a specific process design and program's organizational perspective.
Abstract: Against a pandemic, speed is crucial, and open innovation (OI) helps to empower the human capital distributed around the world to tackle the disease and to launch rapid testing of possible solutions. This article aims at showing an OI program - called “TEN” Transform Emergency Now! - ideated and developed by the University of Bologna to identify, design, and implement useful solutions to tackle specific issues coming from pandemics. With an action research-innovation management approach, the University developed two iterations to identify what elements to take into account to define a program that works for this effort. In TEN, Frugal Innovation (FI) principles were injected in a 10 days hackathon to favor the use of locally available resources and raw materials and exclude nonessential features. Results show that Frugality can become an element of OI by (1) pushing the team towards basic functionality and minimal features of the solutions and low-cost implementation. (2) Designing, in parallel with the solution, an ‘implementation network’, with a specific process design and program’s organizational perspective. We believe that TEN has the potential to be an OI approach designed for emergencies. © ICED 2021.All right reserved.

TL;DR: In this article, a conceptual framework that combines drivers behind these concepts as well as two main paths to creating frugal innovation is presented, identifying possible future research areas that could enrich the knowledge base on Frugal and reverse innovations.
Abstract: Frugal and reverse innovations are two very recent concepts in innovation discourse, receiving significant attention from academics and practitioners. There are numerous successful cases of these concepts in managerial articles. However, academic contributions on the topic are still in their infancy, although significantly burgeoning. We attempt to shed light on these concepts by investigating their antecedents and inter-dependencies, aiming to analyse how they are interlinked. The study presents a conceptual framework that combines drivers behind these concepts as well as two main paths to creating frugal innovation. We conclude by identifying possible future research areas that could enrich the knowledge base on frugal and reverse innovations.

TL;DR: The results have found 10 design principles and 2 design methodologies that have been developed to achieve frugal products and more research has to be carried out to relate these methods with product development theories and understand the impact for product design practice.
Abstract: Since 2010 the concept of frugal innovation has increasingly attracted the attention of both researchers and industry. Frugal innovation holds much promise in the rapidly changing global economy. It has been suggested that this approach needs to be understood by product designers in order to integrate it into product development and bring frugal products into the market place. This research aims to review the current literature on frugal innovation and identify characteristics and methodologies for designing frugal products that has been proposed until now. Our review has analysed 28 journal articles. The results have found 10 design principles and 2 design methodologies that have been developed to achieve frugal products. More research has to be carried out to relate these methods with product development theories and understand the impact for product design practice.

TL;DR: The entrepreneurial journey of frugal innovators provides an insight into the innovation process itself and entrepreneurs using effectuation under extreme resource constraints can leverage the potential of IT to conceptualize and bring to market frugAL innovation products and services.
Abstract: 1 MOTIVATION AND RESEARCH PROBLEM People living under $10 a day (Purchasing Power Parity) in Africa, Asia and the South Pacific represent 71% of world population [3]. This section of population, referred as Base of the Pyramid (BoP) could be served profitably by good enough products and services that are affordable and socially responsible [8]. Prolonged economic recession has forced lower and middle income customers in the West to look for good enough products and services which provide high value for money [5]. The innovation focus is shifting to product, service, process, or system that is affordable, sustainable, good-enough, and rooted in locality. It is often referred as frugal innovation [9]. There is a worldwide need for frugal R&D approaches to create more value from less resources for more people. The entrepreneurial journey of frugal innovators provides an insight into the innovation process itself. Effectuation sketches theoretical representation of entrepreneurial journey. Entrepreneurs using effectuation (effectuators) extend scarce resources with their identity, knowledge, and immediate contacts; are flexible to switch new goals to go around institutional voids; do experiments to innovate; and develop partnerships to minimize uncertainty and risks [10]. Hence, it seems logical to study frugal innovation through the lens of effectuation. The practices and behaviors of entrepreneurs are influenced by ubiquitously present digital technologies. IT extends the intellectual capabilities of innovators, creating endless opportunities of innovation [4] . IT plays an enabling role in the entire value chain of frugal innovation. Entrepreneurs using effectuation under extreme resource constraints can leverage the potential of IT to conceptualize and bring to market frugal innovation products and services.
