Abstract: Consideration of the factors involved in the production of fullerene nanotubes in carbon arcs leads to the notion that a high electric field may be the critical factor that causes the tubes to grow. This thought then leads to a suggestion that it may be possible to grow continuous fullerene fibers many centimeters in length by an electric-field-and-laser induced pyrolysis of gas phase hydrocarbons of fullerenes on the tip of the growing fiber as it extends out from its place of attachment on a high voltage needle. Use of metal- or boron-doped fullerenes (dopyballs) in such an apparatus may lead to the production of doped fullerene fiber nanowires of high strength and conductivity.

Abstract: A first-principles band calculation and theoretical simulation of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS) are performed on a stepped surface of graphite. The calculated band structure and the density of states are similar to those of fullerene tubules. Unlike in fullerene tubules, however, a localized state on the step appears at the Fermi level due to the existence of an edge in the graphite sheet. The calculated STM image shows a triangular lattice structure similar to that of the bulk graphite. However, the positions of the peaks of the tunneling current do not coincide with the atomic sites and shift gradually as they diverge from the step. The calculated STS spectra at a location near the step show a strong peak reflecting the localized state.

Abstract: First principles calculations based on gradient corrected density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations of Ca decorated fullerene yield some novel results: (1) C60 fullerene decorated with 32 Ca atoms on each of its 20 hexagonal and 12 pentagonal faces is extremely stable. Unlike transition metal atoms that tend to cluster on a fullerene surface, Ca atoms remain isolated even at high temperatures. (2) C60Ca32 can absorb up to 62 H2 molecules in two layers. The first 30 H2 molecules dissociate and bind atomically on the 60 triangular faces of the fullerene with an average binding energy of 0.45 eV/H, while the remaining 32 H2 molecules bind on the second layer quasi-molecularly with an average binding energy of 0.11 eV/H2. These binding energies are ideal for Ca coated C60 to operate as a hydrogen storage material at near ambient temperatures with fast kinetics. (3) The gravimetric density of this hydrogen storage material can reach 6.2 wt %. Simple model calculations show that this density is the limiting value for higher fullerenes.
