TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a supramolecular two-dimensional architecture of trimesic acid molecules adsorbed on a graphite substrate as a host for the incorporation of C60 as a molecular guest.
Abstract: This scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study uses a supramolecular two-dimensional architecture of trimesic acid molecules adsorbed on a graphite substrate as a host for the incorporation of C60 as a molecular guest. By choosing a proper solvent, it was possible to verify that self-assembly of the host−guest structure can be accomplished at the liquid solid interface. Because of the ideal steric match with the molecular bearing of the host structure, C60 buckminster fullerenes are feasible guests. It was possible to coadsorb C60 within cavities of the open TMA structure from the liquid phase, and lateral manipulation of the molecular guest by the STM tip was demonstrated at room temperature. Because of the increased tip−sample interaction as a result of lower tunneling resistance, a transfer of a C60 molecule from one cavity of the host structure to an adjacent one was achieved.

TL;DR: In this paper, a morphological changes are observed in polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunctions upon the substitution of the bridging atom, which is a promising class of low bandgap materials.
Abstract: Carbon bridged (C-PCPDTBT) and silicon-bridged (Si-PCPDTBT) dithiophene donor-acceptor copolymers belong to a promising class of low bandgap materials. Their higher field-effect mobility, as high as 10 -2 cm 2 V -1 s -1 in pristine films, and their more balanced charge transport in blends with fullerenes make silicon-bridged materials better candidates for use in photovoltaic devices. Striking morphological changes are observed in polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunctions upon the substitution of the bridging atom. XRD investigation indicates increased π-π stacking in Si-PCPDTBT compared to the carbon-bridged analogue. The fluorescence of this polymer and that of its counterpart C-PCPDTBT indicates that the higher photogeneration achieved in Si-PCPDTBT:fullerene films (with either [C60]PCBM or [C70]PCBM) can be correlated to the inactivation of a charge-transfer complex and to a favorable length of the donor-acceptor phase separation. TEM studies of Si-PCPDTBT:fullerene blended films suggest the formation of an interpenetrating network whose phase distribution is comparable to the one achieved in C-PCPDTBT-fullerene using 1,8-octanedithiol as an additive. In order to achieve a balanced hole and electron transport, Si-PCPDTBT requires a lower fullerene content (between 50 to 60 wt%) than C-PCPDTBT (more than 70 wt%). The Si-PCPDTBT:[C70]PCBM OBHJ solar cells deliver power conversion efficiencies of over 5%.

TL;DR: In this article, functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used in donor/acceptor-type photovoltaic devices to provide higher exciton dissociation volume and increased mobility for carrier transport.
Abstract: We have introduced functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in donor/acceptor-type photovoltaic devices. We fabricated the devices based on heterostructure between polymer-CNT composite and buckminsterfullerene (C60) layers. Due to the functional groups of the CNTs, a homogeneous blend of CNT-polymer composite could be obtained. In the composite, the nanotubes acted as exciton dissociation sites and also hopping centers for hole transport. The CNTs in the polymer-CNT∕C60 device provided higher exciton dissociation volume and increased mobility for carrier transport. We have observed an increase in open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current in the polymer-CNT∕C60 devices as compared to the polymer∕C60 ones.
