TL;DR: A new geometric programming approach for optimizing compressor operation in natural gas pipelines is presented and it is shown that the geometric programming algorithm consistently outperforms approaches that mimic the existing state of practice.
Abstract: Natural gas transmission pipelines are complex systems whose flow characteristics are governed by challenging nonlinear physical behavior. These pipelines extend over hundreds and even thousands of miles. Gas is typically injected into the system at a constant rate, and a series of compressors is distributed along the pipeline to boost the gas pressure to maintain system pressure and throughput. These compressors consume a portion of the gas, and one goal of the operator is to control the compressor operation to minimize this consumption while satisfying pressure constraints at the gas load points. The optimization of these operations is computationally challenging. Many pipelines simply rely on the intuition and prior experience of operators to make these decisions. Here, we present a new geometric programming approach for optimizing compressor operation in natural gas pipelines. Using models of real natural gas pipelines, we show that the geometric programming algorithm consistently outperforms approaches that mimic the existing state of practice.

TL;DR: An analytical model for control of rotating stall has been obtained from the basic fluid equations describing the process at inception, and the successful implementation of a complex-valued proportional control law resulted in an 18% reduction of stalling mass flow, at essentially the same pressure rise.

TL;DR: In this paper, a capacity control system for a pressure swing adsorption apparatus including a compressor for pumping a flow of a gaseous mixture through an adaption medium is presented.
Abstract: A pressure swing adsorption apparatus including a compressor for pumping a flow of a gaseous mixture through an adsorption medium utilizes a capacity control system by which the operating capacity of the compressor can be preselected. The capacity control system is disposed upstream, i.e. on the suction side of, the compressor for limiting, when desired, the feed stream drawn into the compressor. A reduction in the operating capacity of the apparatus by way of the control system results in a corresponding reduction in the power consumption and noise levels of the compressor. The system is particularly advantageous when incorporated in an oxygen-generating unit intended for use by a patient requiring oxygen therapy in his home in that the capacity of a high capacity unit can be reduced, when appropriate, by a distributor or technician prior to use of the unit by the patient so that the patient receives the oxygen-rich product stream that he has been prescribed to receive and to reduce operating costs of the unit. The method of the invention includes the steps performed by the control system.

TL;DR: In this article, two turbochargers are operated in a series configuration for a first operating region and a parallel configuration for the second operating region to control exhaust gas recirculation in a turbocharged internal combustion engine.
Abstract: Systems and methods for turbocharging an internal combustion engine include operating two turbochargers in a series configuration for a first operating region and a parallel configuration for a second operating region. Systems and methods for controlling exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in a turbocharged internal combustion engine provide low pressure EGR upstream of a compressor inlet for a first operating region and high pressure EGR downstream of a compressor outlet for a second operating range to further improve turbocharger operating margin and overall efficiency.

TL;DR: A gas turbine engine for generating electricity having low NOx emissions is described in this article. But it does not describe the combustion system of a gas turbine with a plurality of individual combustors mounted in a circular or annular array around the upper cap.
Abstract: A gas turbine engine (10) for generating electricity having low NOx emissions that includes a turbine system (12) linearly and axially connected by a power shaft (12a) to a compressor section (14) and having a combustion section (13) mounted vertically relative to the turbine section and the compressor section. The combustion system includes a plurality of individual combustors (43) mounted in a circular or annular array around the upper cap or dome (80) of the combustion system, each of said combustors being a dual mode, two-stage, emitting low levels of NOx. Each combustor exhausts its combustion gases into a common central plenum chamber that is vertically oriented relative to the turbine engine blades through an annular chamber 360 degrees around the shaft.
