Abstract: This paper describes a design methodology to achieve optimal performance for a short-stroke single-phase tubular permanent-magnet motor which drives a reciprocating vapor compressor. The steady-state characteristic of the direct-drive linear-motor compressor system is analyzed, an analytical formula for predicting iron loss is presented, and a motor-design procedure which takes into account the effect of compressor loads under nominal operating condition is formulated. It is shown that the motor efficiency can be optimized with respect to two leading dimensional ratios. Experimental results validate the proposed design methodology.

TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical and experimental studies were performed on a directexpansion solar-assisted heat pump (DX-SAHP) water heating system, in which a 2 m2 bare flat collector acts as a source as well as an evaporator for the refrigerant.
Abstract: Analytical and experimental studies were performed on a direct-expansion solar-assisted heat pump (DX-SAHP) water heating system, in which a 2 m2 bare flat collector acts as a source as well as an evaporator for the refrigerant. A simulation model was developed to predict the long-term thermal performance of the system approximately. The monthly averaged COP was found to vary between 4 and 6, while the collector efficiency ranged from 40 to 60%. The simulated results were used to obtain an optimum design of the system and to determinate a proper strategy for system operating control. The effect of various parameters, including solar insolation, ambient temperature, collector area, storage volume and speed of compressor, had been investigated on the thermal performance of the DX-SAHP system, and the results had indicated that the system performance is governed strongly by the change of solar insolation, collector area and speed of compressor. The experimental results obtained under winter climate conditions were shown to agree reasonably with the computer simulation. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: In this article, a small scroll expander was incorporated into a power cycle for performance evaluation, and the major components of the power cycle were monitored for performance, and from these values, overall cycle efficiency was determined.
Abstract: A small scroll expander has been incorporated into a power cycle for performance evaluation. Using heat from a circulating hot oil supply, a working fluid (R123) was vapourized under pressure and fed to the inlet of the expander. Power generated was measured by a torque/rotation rate sensor as the power was delivered to a compressor. The exhausted working fluid was then sent through a regenerator to recover thermal energy, and then to an air-cooled condensation heat exchanger. To complete the cycle, the working fluid passed through a pump and was fed back to the boiler by way of the regenerator. The major components of the power cycle were monitored for performance, and from these values, overall cycle efficiency was determined. A model of the system was also developed in order to validate system state points and allow follow-on projections of cycle performance with better component efficiencies. Depending on the operating state points during testing, the power output from the cycle ranged from 18...
