TL;DR: In this article, a simple bleed system was adopted for internal flow recirculation to a high flowrate, high efficiency, pressure ratio 4.2 centrifugal compressor stage, and computational fluid dynamics calculations were performed in order to gain insight into the flow pattern in both the compressor stage and the bleed system.
Abstract: State-of-the-art centrifugal compressors for turbocharger applications are required to provide broad compressor maps, high pressure ratios and high efficiency levels. Usually these requirements are perceived as contradictory and represent challenging design targets. Various techniques for map width enhancements have been reported since the early 1980s. ABB Turbo Systems Limited has adopted a simple bleed system for internal flow recirculation to a high flowrate, high efficiency, pressure ratio 4.2 centrifugal compressor stage. After initial test runs had proved the effectiveness of the bleed system, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations were performed in order to gain insight into the flow pattern in both the compressor stage and the bleed system. The simulations explain the effectiveness by comparing them with simulations without the bleed channel. Selected streamline and iso-surface plots show the effect of the bleed channel flow on the main flow through the impeller. Four more variant...

TL;DR: In this paper, a turbocharged internal combustion engine assembly with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) includes an air compressor driven by an exhaust turbine, an EGR line that diverts exhaust gases from an exhaust line leading from the engine to an air intake line leading to the engine from the compressor, and a combustion bypass line that conveys compressed air from the compressors to the exhaust turbine without combustion.
Abstract: A turbocharged internal combustion engine assembly with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) includes an air compressor driven by an exhaust turbine, an EGR line that diverts exhaust gases from an exhaust line leading from the engine to an air intake line leading to the engine from the compressor, and a combustion bypass line that conveys compressed air from the compressor to the exhaust turbine without combustion. A pressure adjusting feature disposed along at least one of the air intake line and the exhaust line maintains the pressure at the turbine inlet below the pressure at the compressor outlet and above the pressure at the air inlet of the engine. Examples of suitable pressure adjusting features include a venturi placed in the air intake line at the second point, a power turbine located along the exhaust line downstream of the exhaust turbine, a split exhaust manifold feeding unequal turbine inlets, and an orifice located along the exhaust line between the EGR line and the bypass line.

TL;DR: In this article, a temperature-controlled compressor recirculation flow is used to reduce condensation from EGR being ingested into the compressor in order to reduce compressor surge. But this flow is also used to address compressor surge in case of EGR ingestion.
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for varying a proportion of compressed air recirculated to a compressor inlet from a location downstream of the compressor and upstream of a charge air cooler and a location downstream of the charge air cooler. A temperature-controlled compressor recirculation flow is used to reduce condensation from EGR being ingested into the compressor. The temperature-controlled compressor recirculation flow is also used to address compressor surge.

TL;DR: In this paper, a gear train is selectively operatively joined between the first and second shafts by selectively engaging a first clutch for transmitting torque through the first clutch only in one direction from the first shaft to the second shaft.
Abstract: A method and assembly are effective for air-starting an aircraft gas turbine engine having a fan powered by a low pressure turbine through a first shaft, and a compressor powered by a high pressure turbine through a second shaft disposed coaxially therewith. A gear train is selectively operatively joined between the first and second shafts by selectively engaging a first clutch for transmitting torque through the first clutch only in one direction from the first shaft to the second shaft when the fan is windmilling for driving the second shaft to allow an air-start of the gas turbine engine during flight. In a preferred embodiment, a second clutch is operatively joined to the gear train and is selectively engageable at speeds of the second shaft below a predetermined release speed, and disengageable at the release speed and above for disconnecting the air-start assembly once the engine has been started.

TL;DR: In this article, three micro-evaporator cooling cycles, one with a pump, another with a compressor and a hybrid of the two together, are proposed for cooling a computer blade server.
Abstract: Three micro-evaporator cooling cycles, one with a pump, one with a compressor and a hybrid of the two together, are proposed for cooling a computer blade server. The hybrid cycle is characterized by the interchangeability between the first two cycles, where the decision on the cycle to operate is based on the season (necessity or economical benefit for heat recovery) or the maintenance of cycle's driver. The main characteristics of each cycle are presented as well as the details of the micro-evaporator cooler for the blade's CPU. Analysis of the cycle overall efficiency and the potential for heat recovery shows that the best cycle to use depends mainly on the end application of the heat recovered. Four refrigerants were evaluated as the possible working fluids for cooling the microprocessors. HFC134a and HFC245fa were found to be the best choices for the desired application.
