Abstract: This paper investigates a failure in convection section tubes of a gas heater unit in a petrochemical plant. Tubes are made of AISI 304 stainless steel. The failure is reported after 5 years of service at working temperature 500 °C. The failure is in the form of circumferential cracks in the vicinity of the weld. Various characterization techniques, including optical and electron microscopes as well as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), were used to study the failure. Results showed that that the damage has initiated in the heat affected zone (HAZ) area parallel to the weld/base metal interface. Cracks have propagated alongside grain boundaries, resulting in an intergranular fracture. The main cause of failure was concluded to be attributable to the grain boundary sensitization and intergranular grain boundary attack due to improper welding and long time exposure of tubes to high temperature. Possible mitigation strategies to minimize similar failures will be discussed.

Abstract: Hybrid systems combining heat pump and gas heater can demonstrate the economic benefits, while their environmental performance is rarely investigated. In this paper, a comprehensive environmental performance investigation has been conducted to reveal the potential for emission reductions. A new environmental impact methodology has been built, and various influencing factors are evaluated. In respect of the climates, the hourly energy consumption emission first increases and then declines, which is the result of multiple effects from the weighting factors of fuel source emissions and each heating sector’s performance. Under the operation condition map for the current study, the effects of the target (final) water temperatures, electricity generation emission factor reduction, and price ratios are revealed to be the top 3 heaviest fluctuations for emissions for hourly system operation energy consumption, followed by each heating sector’s efficiency enhancements. The environmental impacts due to hourly system operation do not closely follow the hourly energy consumption profile for the effect of climate conditions and can be quite opposite when considering the effect of fuel source price ratios. In addition, the lifetime environmental performance has been examined for typical cities in China. In the cold region, such as Shenyang, the emission due to the natural gas contributor shares more than 46% of the total emissions. For warm cities (Shanghai, Wuhan, and Chengdu), the emission of the natural gas is only responsible for ~ 9% or even less of the total emissions. A switch from R410A (GWP100:1924) to R452B (GWP100:675) can also lead to ~ 11% emission total reductions for city of Shanghai, Wuhan, and Chengdu. It is anticipated that the viewpoints and insights from this study can be beneficial for the engineers, policymakers, scholars, public, and manufactures to maintaining the maximum sustainability and economic benefits.

Abstract: Heating of large-cubage buildings accounts for significant share of energy consumption. The radiant heating system using gas heaters is a common solution for large-cubage halls and is considered to be energy efficient. There is a possibility of additional heat energy recovery from the flue gases of gas radiant heaters because new solutions were introduced to the market. Furthermore heat recovery consists the most promising solution and develop during the recent years rapidly. On the other hand, few works have been dedicated to heat recovery from exhaust gas but none of them consider exhaust gas from radiant heaters. Exhaust gas temperature depends on the type and efficiency of the gas heater. The selection of both the type of radiant heaters and the heat recovery system requires many factors to be taken into account. This study consider possibilities for application of different heat exchangers in exhaust gases system of gas radiant heaters. The authors propose to classify exhaust gas heat recovery systems in dependence on intermediary medium: water/air, gas heaters type: ceramic/tube and number (single/group) and their mounting location.

Abstract: The invention discloses a test method for ignition performance of a gas heater. The method comprises the following steps: controlling opening of an electric water stop valve and starting timing when water flow flows in, after ignition, obtaining air pressure detection closing time T1 when an air pressure closing signal is detected; after a flame normal combustion signal of the heater is kept at afirst time threshold value, obtaining ignition success time T2, and determining the ignition performance of the heater according to the air pressure detection closing time T1 and the ignition successtime T2. The invention further discloses a test system for ignition performance of the gas heater and the gas heater. According to the test method and system for ignition performance of the gas heater, and the gas heater in the invention, the important ignition performance parameters such as the time from a water getting point of a user to successful closing of the air pressure, successful ignition time and the like can be full-automatically tested, and the accuracy of the test result is high.

Abstract: Thermal energy storage is an active field of research that can be adopted for energy efficiency and conservation in thermal applications on conventional systems. Moreover, they are equally effective to be used with renewable resources to mitigate their intermittency in terms of availability. This paper covers the experimental investigation of the latent thermal energy storage system, in which Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate (MgCl 2 .6H 2 O) was used as thermal energy storage material. Literature lists MgCl 2 .6H 2 O as a strong candidate for thermal energy storage in the medium range with melting temperature of 117.5° C and latent heat of 168.6 kJ/kg. Aluminum encapsulation was used with PCM for testing with gas heater. The flame temperature of domestic gas heater ranges from 600 to 800° C, at this temperature the PCM was fully charged in less than 900s and stored about 30 kJ of thermal energy till the final temperature of the material reached to 320° C. In the discharging phase, subcooling was observed and the material released thermal energy to a threshold temperature of 60° C in 930s. This study considered the direct contact TES system.

The test device has a compact structure, the mounting is convenient, the test cost is low, the urgent needs for aircraft engine titanium alloy combustion characteristic evaluation at preset and in the future can be met, and the application prospect is wide.

Abstract: Due to serious environmental impact from huge amount of energy and water resource consumption in industrial processes, the industries have been looking for new systems based on renewable energy. Performance of the directly-irradiated fluidized gas heater (50 mm-ID × 100 mm high) with silicone carbide particles has been determined for the application of exhaust steam reuse in the low- and medium temperature processes. The minimum fluidization velocity (Umf) of SiC is 0.0054 m/s, where the solar receiver was operated for keeping the fluidization state. The bed temperature shows a maximum value of about 200 °C around 0.013–0.021 m/s of gas velocity. It is considered that a high gas temperature is obtained in the vicinity of the minimum bubbling velocity where small bubbles are formed. The produced heat energy increases up to 18 W with increasing gas velocity. The optimum condition in this study is around 0.050 m/s. The energy efficiency was calculated to be 14%. A possible improvement of the gas heater has been proposed based on the experimental results.
