TL;DR: In this paper, a vehicle engine accessory drive system is disclosed including a hydraulic fan motor (M) and a power steering gear mechanism (SG) in series flow relationship, including a variable displacement power steering pump assembly (P) which is the sole source of fluid for the system.
Abstract: A vehicle engine accessory drive system is disclosed including a hydraulic fan motor (M) and a power steering gear mechanism (SG) in series flow relationship. The system includes a variable displacement power steering pump assembly (P) which is the sole source of fluid for the system, and includes a variable displacement pumping element (PE) and a displacement control valve (CV). The displacement control valve includes a pilot valve (35) which is responsive to the demand for cooling to vary the fluid pressure in a signal chamber (63). The displacement control valve is operable to communicate a control fluid pressure to a stroking cylinder (SC) to control the fluid delivery rate of the pumping element. At a first relatively lower temperature, the displacement control valve maintains the fluid delivery rate of the pumping element at Z, and at a second relatively higher temperature, to maintain the fluid delivery rate at X. Controlling the fluid flow rate out of the pumping element in response to demand for cooling results in a substantial savings of pump input horsepower, especially when the hydraulic fan motor is operating at the minimum fan speed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a dynamic cooling apparatus is provided for dynamically cooling molten plastic extrudate while pumping metered amounts of extruded plastic to an extrusion die or the like.
Abstract: A dynamic cooler apparatus is provided for dynamically cooling molten plastic extrudate while pumping metered amounts of that extrudate to an extrusion die or the like. The dynamic cooler apparatus utilizes bi-helical gears in a gear pump configuration in a housing in which a heat exchange medium is circulated. The heat exchange medium is also circulated internally of the gears so that the gear teeth and the housing act to cool discrete volumes of extrudate from four sides defined by the gear teeth and the internal surface of the housing. The bi-helical gears are driven to minimize loading between the teeth thereof and to permit the teeth to be as small as practical to present more cooling surface for a given cross-section of extrudate and optimize the heat transfer capability of the dynamic cooler apparatus. Provision is also made to use the molten extrudate as a lubricant for the shafts and bearings of the bi-helical gears.

TL;DR: In this paper, a wind driven generator having a 60 ft. dia. wind wheel and generating up to 30 KW, drives four hydraulic gear pumps through step up gearing, a transducer ensures that only one pump is on torque at low speeds, but further pumps are on torque on higher speeds.
Abstract: A wind driven generator having e.g. a 60 ft. dia. wind wheel and generating up to 30 KW, drives four hydraulic gear pumps through step up gearing. A transducer ensures that only one pump is on torque at low speeds, but further pumps are on torque at higher speeds. The pumps one fed from a header tank, and the hydraulic fluid then passes to a piston and cylinder device loaded with a ballast weight. When pressure rises due to increased wheel speed, the piston operate valves are limit switches and a 5KW hydraulic motor is operated to drive an induction generator. For higher wind speeds, the piston rises further and a second hydraulic motor is operated to drive a generator connected to a resistive load for heating. All these devices are operated intermittently as the wind speed varies. At very high speeds, spoilers or flaps on the blades of the wheel can be operated, reducing the efficiency. The first generator can be used to return power to the local mains. The second generator can have a capacity of between 25 and 30 KW.

TL;DR: The inventive pumping system as mentioned in this paper includes at least two parallel working pumps or compressors, at least one of which is operable as either a pump or a turbine in one or both directions, its drive motor being also capable of operating as a generator.
Abstract: The inventive pumping system includes at least two parallel-working pumps or compressors, at least one of which is operable as either a pump or a turbine in one or both directions, its drive motor being also capable of operating as a generator so as to feed electrical power back into the electrical network to which it is connected when necessary. At high fluid flows all the pumps or turbines act as pumps to cause the fluid medium to flow in one direction, whereas as low fluid flows the normal-acting pump or compressor operates at a relatively high energy-efficient speed while the excess flowing fluid medium is caused to flow in a return fashion through the outer pumps or turbines such that they act as turbines and thus generate electrical energy for feeding back to the electrical network to which it is connected.

TL;DR: In this paper, the output drive shaft is driven by the flywheel while the gear housing and associated gears rotate freely at the output shaft speed resulting in reduced friction in the gear train.
Abstract: A mechanical transmission having reduced friction direct drive. An input shaft from a flywheel is drivingly connected to a clutch cover and a tubular shaft. The tubular shaft is connected to a sun gear which engages a pair of planetary gears. The planetary gears are connected to an output drive shaft mounted within and coaxial with the flywheel driven tubular shaft by means of a pair of support arms. The other end of the output shaft is connected to a clutch plate mounted adjacent to the flywheel within the clutch housing. A ring gear, mounted within a gear cover, engages the planetary gears. The gear housing is mounted for rotation around both the tubular and output drive shafts. A band brake surrounds the outside of the gear housing. In reduced ratio drive the clutch is disengaged from the flywheel and the band is clamped to the gear housing so that the ring gear is fixed. The output shaft is driven by the planetary gears, which in turn are driven by the rotation of the sun gear connected through the tubular shaft to the flywheel, causing a reduced ratio output. In direct drive or high gear, the clutch is engaged causing rotation of the output shaft with the flywheel, and the band brake is released allowing the ring gear and gear housing to rotate freely at the same speed as the sun and planetary gears. The output drive shaft is thus directly driven by the flywheel while the gear housing and associated gears rotate freely at the output shaft speed resulting in reduced friction in the gear train.

TL;DR: A gear pump suitable for pumping contaminated fuel has a lubrication passage in a pump bearing which receives fuel from the clearance volume between the bearing and the housing in the pump discharge arc as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A gear pump suitable for pumping contaminated fuel has a lubrication passage in a pump bearing which receives fuel from the clearance volume between the bearing and the housing in the pump discharge arc. The clearance entrance between the bearing and the housing, which functions as a filter, is smaller than the passage so that contaminants traversing the clearance will not obstruct the passage. Since only contaminants smaller than the clearance entrance can enter the passage, the passage may be made sufficiently small so as not to adversely affect pump performance.

TL;DR: A fluid pump control for a tractor having a fluid pump controlled by an operator's handle connected to the pump by force-responsive members which do not transmit the pump vibration to the handle is described in this paper.
Abstract: A fluid pump control for a tractor having a fluid pump controlled by an operator's handle connected to the pump by force-responsive members which do not transmit the pump vibration to the handle. The control is for a tractor transmission driven through a variable displacement pump which inherently develops vibrations. The handle is a pivotally mounted lever and the connections between the handle and the pump are four cables, and two intervening compression springs, all for transmitting the force on the lever to the pump while avoiding transmitting the pump vibrations back to the lever. The springs also are arranged with the cables to automatically return the pump to a neutral position when the operator releases hand force on the lever.
