TL;DR: In this article, a tool rest for cutting a spherical hob is used to produce the same tooth form despite cutting of the tooth surface, by keeping step with the turn of a hob and moving back and forth against the hob by means of a cam mechanism.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce the same tooth form despite cutting of the tooth surface, by turning a tool rest for cutting a spherical hob keeping step with the turn of a hob and moving back and forth against the hob by means of a cam mechanism. CONSTITUTION:As a hob work 2' is turned through a spindle 11 by a motor 12, a swivel slide 13, base plate 19 and tool rest 21 are turned through a gear mechanism 16 and worm 15, and a tool 24 cuts out a spiral hob. The motor 12 turns a cam 32 through a gear mechanism 34 to shift the work 2' against the tool rest 21 fitted slidable to the base plate 19, the tool 24 draws near to the work 2' at a certain rate and then quickly returns to the original position. If the hob is blunt, the same tooth form as that of an original virtual gear can be dislocated by reversing the work 2' and repeating the said operation.
