Abstract: For data collection in large-scale wireless sensor networks (WSNs), dynamic clustering provides a scalable and energy-efficient solution, which uses cluster head (CH) rotation and cluster range assignment algorithms to balance the energy consumption. Nevertheless, most existing works consider the clustering and routing as two isolated issues, which is harmful to the connectivity and energy efficiency of the network. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis on the relations between clustering and routing, and then propose a joint clustering and routing (JCR) protocol for reliable and efficient data collection in large-scale WSN. JCR adopts the backoff timer and gradient routing to generate connected and efficient intercluster topology with the constraint of maximum transmission range. The relations between clustering and routing in JCR are further exploited by theoretical and numerical analyses. The results show that the multihop routing in JCR may lead to the unbalanced CH selection. Then, the solution is provided to optimize the network lifetime by considering the gradient of one-hop neighbor nodes in the setting of backoff timer. Theoretical analysis and simulation results prove the connectivity and efficiency of the network topology generated by JCR.

Abstract: Methods and systems for providing a network and routing protocol for utility services are disclosed. A method includes discovering a utility network. Neighboring nodes are discovered and the node listens for advertised routes for networks from the neighbors. The node is then registered with one or more utility networks, receiving a unique address for each network registration. Each upstream node can independently make forwarding decisions on both upstream and downstream packets, i.e., choose the next hop according to the best information available to it. The node can sense transient link problems, outage problems and traffic characteristics. Information is used to find the best route out of and within each network. Each network node maintains multi-egress, multi-ingress network routing options both for itself and the node(s) associated with it. The node is capable of several route maintenance functions utilizing the basic routing protocol and algorithms.

Abstract: We present an analytical model for the performance evaluation of hypercube computers. This analysis is aimed at modeling a deadlock-free wormhole routing scheme prevalent on second generation hypercube systems. Probability of blocking and average message delay are the two performance measures discussed. We start with the communication traffic to find the probability of blocking. The traffic analysis can capture any message destination distribution. Next, we find the average message delay that consists of two parts. The first part is the actual message transfer delay between any source and destination nodes. The second part of the delay is due to blocking caused by the wormhole routing scheme. The analysis is also extended to virtual cut-through routing and random wormhole routing techniques. The validity of the model is demonstrated by comparing analytical results with those from simulation. >
