TL;DR: In this article, an approach is proposed to predict Gibbs energies and enthalpies of formation for complex minerals of metallurgical, chemical, and other industrial importance, assuming that complex minerals are formed from binary composite oxides.
Abstract: New and updated thermodynamic data for simple binary compounds are readily available from both experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. Based on these available data, an approach is proposed to predict Gibbs energies and enthalpies of formation for complex minerals of metallurgical, chemical, and other industrial importance. The approach assumes that complex minerals are formed from binary composite oxides, which in turn, are formed from individual pure oxides. The validity of this approach is examined by comparing the calculated values of Gibbs energies and enthalpies against the experimentally measured ones reported in literature. The results show that for typical complex minerals with available experimental data, the calculated results exhibit an average residual of 0.51 pct for Gibbs energies and 0.52 pct for enthalpies, compared to the experimental results. This new approach thus correlates well with experimental approaches and can be applied to most of the complex minerals.

06 Apr 2008TL;DR: In this article, the authors deal with problems concerning simple thermochemical systems dynamics, modelled by Gibbs-Duhem-Pfaff equation, and define 20 simple thermodynamic systems with three states.
Abstract: The paper deals with problems concerning simple thermochemical systems dynamics, modelled by Gibbs-Duhem-Pfaff equation. Section 1 analyzes the Gibbs-Duhem-Pfaff equation and the associated nonholonomic hypersurface, consisting in integral manifolds with the dimension at most 3. In Section 2 there are listed 6 simple thermodynamical systems with one state. Section 3 describes 15 simple thermodynamical systems with two states. Section 4 defines 20 simple thermodynamical systems with three states. The simple thermodynamical systems depending on measurable state variables are emphasized.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that Ialenti and Caramazza have incorrectly equated the terms on the two sides of the Gibbs-Duhem cross-differential equation and hence have arrived at a false conclusion.
Abstract: It is shown that Ialenti and Caramazza have incorrectly equated the terms on the two sides of the Gibbs–Duhem cross-differential equation and hence have arrived at a false conclusion. In this paper the Harned equations are developed by a correct application of the cross-differentiation condition required by the Gibbs–Duhem equation so as to obtain inter-relations among the Harned coefficients, including one general relation which is required. A necessary condition for the general Gibbs–Duhem equation to hold is also derived and the methods of Scatchard, Pitzer and the higher-order limiting law are all shown to satisfy this condition. For a special case in which a further inter-relation also applies, it is shown that Ak and Bk must be constants for k 2. Relations between the Harned coefficients and the mixing coefficients in ΔmGex and their derivatives are also obtained.
