TL;DR: In this article, two practice fields designed to facilitate system-thinking and organizational learning are presented, Foodcorp International and Globalcorp, and each creates a realistic context for people to interact on business and global issues.
Abstract: For a practice field to be of greatest value in developing global leadership capability, it needs to be constructed so as to combine meaningful cultural and national issues with realistic interpersonal dynamics. Examines how two practice fields designed to facilitate systems thinking and organizational learning – Foodcorp International and Globalcorp – accomplish this task. Both are behavioural simulations (not computer simulations) and each creates a realistic context, a microworld, for people to interact on business and global issues. Both can be used to: (1) bring to the surface cultural assumptions in a social‐business context where they can be observed, tracked and discussed relative to various effectiveness criteria; (2) create a team capable of performing with a shared vision and common mental models; and (3) develop leaders who can create as well as accommodate microcultural norms. Preliminary results using this practice field approach are supportive of these objectives. A growing number of organizations (e.g. Apple Computer, Citicorp, American Express, AT&T, Northern Telecom, Glaxo) and educational institutions (e.g. University of Michigan, Dartmouth College, Indiana University, New York University, the University of Tampa) use such tools in their educational efforts. This permits a rigorous examination of the utility of these tools in management development. Describes the approach, provides two examples of how microworld practice fields are used, and shares the results of the research under way.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that the Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations have all focused on global leadership to the detriment of pressing social, economic and political problems at home, and make the necessary, but much overlooked, link between our nation's international policies and the domestic situation.
Abstract: Empire or Republic? makes the necessary, but much overlooked, link between our nation's international policies and the domestic situation. The authors contend that the Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations have all focused on global leadership to the detriment of pressing social, economic and political problems at home.

TL;DR: The U.S. Air Force Manual (AFM 1-1, Basic Aerospace Doctrine of the United States Air Force, addresses the vagaries in national security defense requirements as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: : The end of cold war and the bipolar focus of US military power introduced new uncertainties in the efforts to fathom the nature and source of future threats to American interests and in the posture defense forces should assume. Air Force Manual (AFM) 1-1, Basic Aerospace Doctrine of the United States Air Force, addresses the vagaries in national security defense requirements. 'We do not know what threats the United States will face in the future, where Americans will face them, or against whom the United States might have to apply military forces.' Continued access to resources and markets, geopolitical alliances and commitments, and the inherent requirements of global leadership make it essential that the US be continuously able to adapt effectively to changes in the environment in each region of the world. Accordingly, one of the four cornerstones in the US defense strategy is forward presence. 'Although the changing global environment allows us to reduce our permanent foreign deployments, some US forces must remain deployed overseas in areas of US interest. The forward presence of US forces makes for more credible deterrence, promotes regional stability, and provides us an initial capability for crisis response and escalation control.' A key aspect of this challenge is the ability to defend worldwide military, political, and economic interests and commitments. Accordingly, US forces must be postured to respond to crises with immediacy and propriety, with an objective being to control escalation and resolve conflicts on terms favorable to the US and its allies
