TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the topic of cross-cultural leadership from different angles and discuss what is probably the most comprehensive study of global leadership (called GLOBE) and illustrate the different faces of leadership across both cultures and organizations.
Abstract: Management Challenge Despite the plethora of books on leadership, we still know very little about how or why leadership efforts succeed or fail. And we know even less about how to train leaders, global or otherwise, despite the innumerable training programs available. One thing is clear, however: leadership is not a quality or skill that can be easily replicated around the world. Leadership in Singapore, for example, is based on fundamentally different traditions and assumptions from those in the Netherlands, and these differences cannot be ignored. As a result, the challenge for global managers is to develop a sensitivity and understanding of how leadership efforts play out across countries and cultures, as well as how to behave when placed in or near such responsibilities. We explore this topic in this chapter, looking at the topic from different angles. We also discuss what is probably the most comprehensive study of global leadership (called GLOBE). Throughout, examples are used to illustrate the different faces of leadership across both cultures and organizations. At the conclusion of the conference, an observer from The Economist characterized the meeting as having one overriding theme: the importance of developing global leaders – in corporations, nation states, and NGOs. “The two most popular words in the business lexicon today are ‘global’ and ‘leadership.’ Put them together and people in suits start to salivate.” Indeed, global leadership is both an important topic and a topic about which we understand far less than we pretend.

TL;DR: The current financial crisis shows that if it is burning in one corner, people in every corner feel it as discussed by the authors, and this is the case even when it is only burning in a small corner of the world.
Abstract: Humankind is dependent on “One Earth”. People are living on one “Spaceship”, which is our Earth. If it is burning in one corner, people in every corner feel it. The current financial crisis shows u...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore how emerging areas of study become recognized as disciplines and apply this knowledge to the global leadership discipline, comparing and contrasting their offerings and approaches, and reflecting on global leadership doctoral education's role in the ultimate crafting of the discipline.
Abstract: Global leadership is a vibrant and still emerging field of study. As scholarship grows in this area, the boundaries of the field become more defined. This has a direct impact on curriculum selection for courses and degree programs focused on global leadership. This article begins by exploring how emerging areas of study become recognized as disciplines and applies this knowledge to the global leadership discipline. We also look at doctoral-level degree programs in global leadership, comparing, and contrasting their offerings and approaches, and reflecting on global leadership doctoral education’s role in the ultimate crafting of the discipline. Finally, the curriculum strategies within the doctoral program in global leadership at Indiana Tech are discussed to illustrate the complex and multidisciplinary approach required to prepare global leadership scholars-practitioners.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical study offers shared leadership strategies that can be considered for the development of Gen Y teachers into leadership positions in education systems, which is the generation that must be groomed and nurtured for future leadership position in schools.
Abstract: Educational systems are experiencing a global leadership crisis. A large number of school principals represent Baby Boomers Generation, that is, individuals born between 1946 and 1964. These principals are increasingly retiring from leadership and principal positions and there are a fewer applicants for the job. Therefore, it is critical that education systems develop the leadership capacity of teachers able to assume formal leadership positions as the current cohort of principals retire. Currently, the teaching population is made up Generation Y (Gen Y) teachers, that is, individuals born approximately between 1981 and 1995. This is the generation that must be groomed and nurtured for future leadership position in schools. Shared leadership can be an effective strategy to develop these aspiring leaders group belonging to Gen Y into leadership position. This theoretical study offers shared leadership strategies that can be considered for development of Gen Y teachers into leadership positions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an analytical scheme for organizations and leaders to consider global mindset as a premise to develop competitive advantage in international markets, which facilitates an understanding of how things are done, the psychic distance decreases and facilitates connections between local and global.
Abstract: This theoretical paper aims to present an analytical scheme for organizations and leaders consider global mindset as a premise to develop competitive advantage in international markets. Global mindset is theme related to global leadership, yet little discussed theoretically and empirically. It is questioned whether the global mindset, as a dimension of global leadership, can generate competitive advantage in internationalization processes. The literature indicates that organizational knowledge is in itself valuable strategic resource and organizational capacity to learn is crucial for success in the global competitive environment. However, you must develop the ability to understand and deal with complex global reality. Thus, the global mindset is in competitive premise for global leaders and organizations because it facilitates an understanding of how things are done, the psychic distance decreases and facilitates connections between local and global.
