TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the starting points of their analysis: the global world political and economic environment which the Gulf will most probably face in the near future and the foreseeable emergent real vacuum in world affairs and global leadership; and the multivariate analysis of civil society in the countries of Gulf by international comparison.
Abstract: How will global economic and political cycles and inequality, still existing restrictive gender norms (UNDP, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Human Development Report. Oxford University Press, Oxford and New York (2019). Available at http://www.hdr.undp.org/), and value change affect the future of the region, which had combined proven reserves of 497 billion barrels of crude oil, which represents approximately 34% of the world’s estimated proven crude reserves, and which is the EU’s sixth-largest export market (€78.1 bn of exports in 2019, +5% over 2018)? In this chapter, we present the starting points of our analysis: the global world political and economic environment which the Gulf will most probably face in the near future and the foreseeable emergent real vacuum in world affairs and global leadership; and the multivariate analysis of civil society in the countries of Gulf by international comparison. Here, in the introduction, we present an outline of the social scientific scenery in which this book is located, all characterized by the quest for evidence-driven debates about the realities of the Gulf region by international comparison. The chapter briefly introduces the decisive factors, discussed at length in this book with a wealth of new original, global time series analyses and opinion-survey-co-driven evidence. We highlight, among others, the necessity of the multivariate analyses of opinions on religion, gender, and the desire for democracy, based on World Values Survey data, underlining the general approach of this book in the framework of the recent United Nations Human Development Report, 2019 with its emphasis on inequality and still existing restrictive gender norms.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the relationship among climate-change belief, resilience to climate change, and local government leadership in mediating and moderating the climate change beliefs of riverbank erosion victims in Bangladesh.
Abstract: Although the significance of global leadership in combatting climate change has been widely studied, the effectiveness of local government leadership has been neglected in the literature. This study explores the relationships among climate-change belief, resilience to climate change, and local government leadership (LGL). It also examines local government’s leadership in mediating and moderating the climate-change beliefs (specifically, that climate change is occurring and that it is the result of human activity) and resilience to climate change of victims of river erosion in Bangladesh and uses mediation and moderation analyses to determine the effectiveness of LGL in Bangladesh. Survey data were collected from 200 riverbank-erosion victims, and two focus-group discussions were conducted in the northern districts (Bogra and Sirajganj) of Bangladesh. Applying a mixed-methods approach, this study used adaptive capacity and vulnerability theory (ACVT) as an analytical tool along with structural equation modelling to examine the proposed model. The results suggest that climate-change belief, resilience to climate change, and LGL have significant positive relationships with each other. However, while LGL shows a partial mediation on the relationship between climate-change belief and resilience to climate change, no moderation impact was revealed that demonstrated effective LGL influence among the victims. The study extends the literature regarding the outcomes of LGL activities and initiatives on climate-change belief and resilience to climate change within a non-western context. It also provides empirical evidence from the perspective of ACVT. These results can help both policymakers and local government leaders responsible for climate-change disaster management to expedite the UN’s sustainable development goal (SDG 13), especially in developing countries like Bangladesh.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that a multilateral engagement foreign policy will ensure national security is protected and America's global leadership maintained regardless of future changes in the international system and that an alternative policy must be employed by future US leaders to secure America's future.
Abstract: : The United States in recent years has demonstrated a preference for unilateral engagement that has undermined its long-term interests. Specifically, since the 9/11 terror attacks, the US has employed its unchallenged power and the freedom of action afforded by a unilateral engagement policy to attain national interests rather than constrain its actions to the rules and impediments of multilateral cooperation. This strategy has evoked hostility toward the US and eroded the US's international legitimacy. The situation suggests that unilateral engagement is inadequate in the new foreign policy context and that an alternative policy must be employed by future US leaders to secure America's future. As President Obama's administration takes office America carries the cost of preceding unilateral foreign policy. The time is right to reexamine America's foreign policy strategy to chart a course of action that will best assure the future interests of the US and its allies. This research argues that a multilateral engagement foreign policy will ensure national security is protected and America's global leadership maintained regardless of future changes in the international system. Analysis of alternative futures by means of the scenario-planning process suggests multilateral engagement provides an attractive course for securing national security and maintaining America's global leadership.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that there are a number of emerging initiatives that can be seen to be developing green economy education and training in higher/further education contexts, but that much more needs to be done.
Abstract: The world is set to apply green economy as a framework for achieving sustainable development, eradicate poverty and inequality and create jobs. This reality follows the consensus on green economy by global leaders during Rio+20 in June 2012. At the centre of the green economy is the need to address negative impacts associated with one of the global challenges of our epoch, climate change. Higher education (including further education) is viewed by many as an enabling platform for the generation and acquisition of green economy knowledge and skills for the future we want. The question this paper seeks to address is: are African institutions of higher education green economy ready? This question is not only limited to the curricula, but to broader impact areas in higher education that include the institutionalisation of green economy in policy, research and research management structures, in depth understanding of the green economy concept and the manner in which it links to existing paradigms like sustainable development as well as higher education– private sector partnerships. The paper shows that there are a number of emerging initiatives that can be seen to be developing green economy education and training in higher/further education contexts, but that much more needs to be done. The paper shows a ‘slow awakening’ to the green economy call as revealed by activities from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the Environmental Education Association of Southern Africa (EEASA) and selected universities and private sector initiatives.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify that global leadership must also straddle the political and economic realities of globalization to act as an interface mechanism to build sustainable and humanistic organizational lives for individuals who are experiencing a greater array of identities.
Abstract: Defining globalization and global leadership is a daunting task. Both are relatively new terms and phenomenon, yet were born out of the integration of diverse constructs. The challenge to global leaders is in properly contextualizing the meaning and expression of globalization in their organizational lives. The advent of rapid communication and knowledge transfer technologies has given rise to a tightly integrated global economy, which serves as a proxy definition of globalization. This global economy, however, must interface with more antiquated geopolitical infrastructures. Supranational institutions, such as the World Bank, World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund, European Union, and North American Trade Organization (NATO) all represent attempts to resolve the discord between the economic and political realities of the global landscape. Analyzing contemporary literature on the matter identifies that global leadership must also straddle the political and economic realities of globalization to act as an interface mechanism to build sustainable and humanistic organizational lives for individuals who are experiencing a greater array of identities as social spaces close and cultures collide.
