Abstract: This article concludes that common competencies, the fundamental knowledge and skills developed in traditional educational environments, are necessary but insufficient in the preparation of global leaders. Rather, human resource professionals, in partnership with management educators, are best positioned to identify and facilitate global leadership excellence by focusing on the identification and development of key personal characteristics or distinctive competencies. In particular, global leaders must be men and women of sound character. We further propose that “distinctive competencies” are best assessed through experience in the field. Recommendations are offered as to how competency-based leadership development can be designed to address both common and distinctive competencies, with special attention to the individual's character. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate leadership attributes that contribute to or inhibit the successful adaptation of lean techniques. Design/methodology/approach – Using leadership attributes of the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) project, this paper develops an ideal leadership profile of a production manager who aims to develop a lean production system (based on Liker’s seminal work in 2004). Five hypotheses related to contributor and inhibitor leadership behaviors and their associated leadership attributes are analyzed using survey data based on a PLS model. Findings – According to the results, the proposed conceptual leadership profile, in which leadership attributes are divided into two sets (contributors and inhibitors), required modification. Abstract: The current literature suggests that to succeed in global roles, one needs a global mindset, and in this study, we examine gender differences in global leadership self-efficacies in a random sample of 1,187 managers from 74 countries. Using the Global Mindset Inventory, we found that women demonstrated stronger global leadership profiles in regard to passion for diversity, intercultural empathy, and diplomacy. Conversely, men tended to show strong global leadership self-efficacies regarding global business savvy, cosmopolitan outlook, and interpersonal impact. We discuss the implications of our findings for shared leadership in global contexts and offer a series of suggestions regarding future directions for research.
