TL;DR: In this paper, an integrative literature review was employed on competency theory and global leadership, resulting in the development of a theory-based integrative framework for global leadership competency.
Abstract: As developing excellent global leaders should be an urgent priority of companies in the global business world, there has been considerable research in this area. Despite this, there is limited research on the systematic global leadership competency structure reflecting both on its levels and dimensions and on specific competencies. The purpose of this article is to create a theory-based integrative framework that can be used to identify the competencies comprising global leadership. To accomplish this purpose, an integrative literature review was employed on competency theory and global leadership, resulting in the development of an integrative framework for global leadership competency. The framework, with three levels and four dimensions, established in this article contributes to corporations in providing a means of developing company-specific models of global leadership competency. Also discussed are implications for future human resource development research and theory building.

TL;DR: In this article, a growing number of scholars have studied global leaders and attempted to delineate the competencies that are critical to their success, including vision and strategic thinking, business savvy, organizational savvy, managing communities, and leading change.
Abstract: From the early 1990s forward, a growing number of scholars have studied global leaders and attempted to delineate the competencies that are critical to their success. Reviews of this literature found that social scientists have delineated over 200 competencies that influence global leadership effectiveness. Competencies are distributed roughly equally across the three categories—69 of the 207 competencies fall into the Business and Organizational Savvy grouping, with 63 and 60 competencies in the Managing People and Relationships and Managing Self groups respectively. One group of global leadership competencies relates to a practical understanding of business and organizational realities and how to get things done efficiently and effectively. Business and organizational acumen appears to entail five composite competencies: vision and strategic thinking, business savvy, organizational savvy, managing communities, and leading change. The second group of global leadership competencies is directed toward people and relationships. More broadly, they are focused on managing people and interpersonal relationships.

TL;DR: This article reviewed Klein's model of expert decision making and other research on expert cognition and applied these findings to show how the decision-making processes of expert global leaders might differ from those of novice leaders.
Abstract: In this chapter, we show how our understanding of global leadership can be enriched by applying research on expert decision making. We review Klein's model of expert decision making and other research on expert cognition. Then we apply these findings to show how the decision-making processes of expert global leaders might differ from those of novice leaders. Finally, we suggest directions for future research.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the extreme complexity of the global context in relation to global leadership expertise and relate how the subjects in a qualitative study of expert cognition in global leaders describe their work context.
Abstract: We focus on the extreme complexity of the global context in relation to global leadership expertise. We relate how the subjects in a qualitative study of expert cognition in global leaders describe their work context. Our goal is to build a foundation for a theoretical argument as to what distinguishes domestic/traditional leadership from global leadership and further clarify the role context plays in challenging and developing global leaders.
