TL;DR: In this paper, the authors address two questions: Does integration into global knowledge networks facilitate the efforts of Chinese IT firms to develop innovative capabilities? If yes, precisely what type of capabilities are they developing?
Abstract: China’s opportunities to build innovative capabilities in the IT industry differ from those faced earlier by Japan and East Asian newly industrializing economies (NIEs). China has a unique combination of advantages in a booming market for electronics products and services, the world’s largest pool of low-cost and easily trainable knowledge workers, the emergence of sophisticated lead users and test-bed markets, and policy efforts to strengthen China’s innovation system. As a later latecomer, China can learn from the achievements and mistakes of earlier latecomers. The international environment is also dramatically different. Most important is the expansion of global knowledge networks, which have extended beyond markets for goods and finance into markets for technology and knowledge workers. Taking into account these important differences, this chapter addresses two questions: Does integration into global knowledge networks facilitate the efforts of Chinese IT firms to develop innovative capabilities? If yes, precisely what type of capabilities are they developing? The findings of this chapter can be summarized as follows:• Integration into global knowledge networks exposes Chinese IT firms to leading-edge technology, “best-practice” management, and sources of knowledge. • Knowledge about its own markets and production sites helps Chinese IT firms to exploit these opportunities.• Successful Chinese firms have not attempted to compete head-on with global leaders through radical innovations. Instead, they have focused on incremental and architectural innovations that support technology diversification strategies.• Integration into global networks needs to be supported by a strong domestic innovation system. These findings contradict a pessimistic literature that appraises China’s innovative capabilities as weak. They also contradict fears, sometimes played up for political purposes, that Chinese firms could make radical innovations that would challenge U.S. technology leadership. A central proposition here is that Chinese IT firms make the most progress in areas that escape the attention of both pessimists and proponents of an emerging technology threat.

TL;DR: In this article, two practice fields designed to facilitate system-thinking and organizational learning are presented, Foodcorp International and Globalcorp, and each creates a realistic context for people to interact on business and global issues.
Abstract: For a practice field to be of greatest value in developing global leadership capability, it needs to be constructed so as to combine meaningful cultural and national issues with realistic interpersonal dynamics. Examines how two practice fields designed to facilitate systems thinking and organizational learning – Foodcorp International and Globalcorp – accomplish this task. Both are behavioural simulations (not computer simulations) and each creates a realistic context, a microworld, for people to interact on business and global issues. Both can be used to: (1) bring to the surface cultural assumptions in a social‐business context where they can be observed, tracked and discussed relative to various effectiveness criteria; (2) create a team capable of performing with a shared vision and common mental models; and (3) develop leaders who can create as well as accommodate microcultural norms. Preliminary results using this practice field approach are supportive of these objectives. A growing number of organizations (e.g. Apple Computer, Citicorp, American Express, AT&T, Northern Telecom, Glaxo) and educational institutions (e.g. University of Michigan, Dartmouth College, Indiana University, New York University, the University of Tampa) use such tools in their educational efforts. This permits a rigorous examination of the utility of these tools in management development. Describes the approach, provides two examples of how microworld practice fields are used, and shares the results of the research under way.

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of corporate citizenship education in a global redefinition of global leadership is explored. But, the authors argue that education and training can play an important role in shaping responsible business and citizen behaviour, not only acquiring a working knowledge of applicable legislation, but also interrogating the complex challenges and paradoxes business leaders face.
Abstract: Corporate scandals, concerns about global warming and the continued abuse of natural and human resources by business demand a critical reflection and redefinition of global leadership. Management education in general and corporate citizenship education in particular are claimed to play a crucial role in reassessing what responsible business practice entails. There are several initiatives to ensure that businesses act more responsibly. Legislation and enforcement are foundational components of any strategy to counter the erosion in corporate ethics and the abuse of natural and human resources, but this is not enough. Education and training can play an important role in shaping responsible business and citizen behaviour. Corporate citizenship education should include not only acquiring a working knowledge of applicable legislation but also interrogating the complex challenges and paradoxes business leaders face. This article explores the role corporate citizenship education plays in a global redefinition of...

TL;DR: The authors considers whether there is a "Thucydides trap" in the world economy, referring to the inherent conflict between incumbent and challenger, and assesses the impact of President Trump's alienation of traditional US allies, which threatens to splinter the "hegemonic coalition" and even push China and Europe together, and his convergence toward some Chinese norms on trade and even politics.
Abstract: This paper considers whether there is a “Thucydides trap” in the world economy, referring to the inherent conflict between incumbent and challenger. It assesses the impact of President Trump's alienation of traditional US allies, which threatens to splinter the “hegemonic coalition” and even push China and Europe together, and his convergence toward some Chinese norms on trade and even politics. It outlines three possible systemic scenarios: a “G0” in which the US is no longer willing to lead but China is not yet able or willing, and whether such a (likely) regime will be stable or unstable; a new “G1,” sooner or later, led by China; and a cooperative “G2” in which the US and China agree to share leadership. It traces the evolution of actual leadership initiatives of the two countries in recent years. It compares US and Chinese attitudes on key systemic issues and concludes with an appraisal of “an international economic order with Chinese characteristics,” a world in which the state plays a greater role relative to market economics, the rule of law defers increasingly to voluntary arrangements, and politics tilt toward central government control more than democracy.
