TL;DR: In this paper, a dynamic planning and control methodology is developed by integrating the applications of axiomatic design concepts, concurrent engineering concepts, the graphical evaluation and review technique (GERT), and the system dynamics modeling technique.
Abstract: A dynamic planning and control methodology is developed by integrating the applications of axiomatic design concepts, concurrent engineering concepts, the graphical evaluation and review technique (GERT), and the system dynamics modeling technique. The goal of the proposed methodology is to help create a dynamic project plan for design/build fast-track civil engineering and architectural projects where unforeseen changes can be absorbed in the project schedule without creating major interruptions. The axiomatic design concepts are applied to formulate and evaluate various work methodologies, and to create a project plan based on the selected work methodology. The concept of concurrent engineering is adapted to develop a fast-tracking framework based on the task production rate, the upstream task reliability, and downstream task sensitivity to the upstream error. The GERT diagramming scheme is used to calculate the project duration probabilistically by incorporating the possible branches and loops in the p...

TL;DR: The value of the proposed three-dimensional early warning approach for product development risk management by integrating graphical evaluation and review technique (GERT) and failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) as a means to monitor various risks typical in the manufacturing sector is demonstrated.
Abstract: Concurrent engineering has been widely accepted as a viable strategy for companies to reduce time to market and achieve overall cost savings. This article analyzes various risks and challenges in product development under the concurrent engineering environment. A three-dimensional early warning approach for product development risk management is proposed by integrating graphical evaluation and review technique (GERT) and failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA). Simulation models are created to solve our proposed concurrent engineering product development risk management model. Solutions lead to identification of key risk controlling points. This article demonstrates the value of our approach to risk analysis as a means to monitor various risks typical in the manufacturing sector. This article has three main contributions. First, we establish a conceptual framework to classify various risks in concurrent engineering (CE) product development (PD). Second, we propose use of existing quantitative approaches for PD risk analysis purposes: GERT, FMEA, and product database management (PDM). Based on quantitative tools, we create our approach for risk management of CE PD and discuss solutions of the models. Third, we demonstrate the value of applying our approach using data from a typical Chinese motor company.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a new method to estimate network characteristics such as project time, project cost, etc., by analyzing one set of Monte Carlo simulation results based on the theory of probability.
Abstract: This paper proposes a new method to estimate network characteristics such as project time, project cost, etc. There are many kinds of projects such as new product development and plant construction. Since these projects consist of various uncertain jobs, we can model those processes as stochastic networks such as GERT network. Only simulation technique can analyze the networks' characteristics of practical project model. However, the method is extremely time-consuming. Our method can estimate the network characteristics rapidly and accurately by analyzing one set of Monte Carlo simulation results based on the theory of probability.
