TL;DR: In this article, the mean and coherent flow structures around a single groyne under emerged and submerged conditions were experimentally discussed and a scaled and schematized model was implemented and experiments were conducted by means of surface flow visualization technique and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV).
Abstract: Groynes have been used for the stabilization of banks and for creating a navigation channel by confining the cross-sectional area, especially for large European and Japanese rivers. Therefore, turbulent flows and transport phenomena in groyne fields have paid attention to the appropriate design for bank protection and obtainment of enough depth in the main channel as well as the proper environment for ecosystems. In the present study, mean and coherent flow structures around single groyne under emerged and submerged conditions were experimentally discussed. In order to investigate the flow pattern around the single groyne, a scaled and schematized model was implemented and experiments were conducted by means of surface flow visualization technique and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV). Furthermore, analytical techniques of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) are applied to reveal typical pattern of coherent structures.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a physical hydraulic model for groyne operated under clear-water condition and using uniform cohesionless sand as bed material to calculate the depth of local scour.
Abstract: This study based on laboratory experiments for computing depth of local scour around groyne when a different spacing between the groynes using as a countermeasure. This study is conducted using a physical hydraulic model for groyne operated under clear-water condition and using uniform cohesionless sand as bed material. A different types of spacing (1, 1.5, and 2) from length of groynes is investigated with different water depths and flow intensities. It is developed a new formula to calculate a local scour around groynes included many parameter. Also, it has been observed that increasing the distance between the groynes leads to increase the depth of the scour about (20)%.

TL;DR: In this article, a system of plastic pipes which are anchored vertically in place along a shoreline by a concrete form that will position the pipes with a specific distance between pipes is described.
Abstract: A system of plastic pipes which are anchored vertically in place along a shoreline by a concrete form that will position the pipes with a specific distance between pipes. Once the pipes are positioned, a concrete cap will be poured to permanently secure the pipes, after which the concrete form can be removed and moved to a new location.

TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated study on the mitigating measures for these morphodynamic issues at both Wenduine and Blankenberge is performed, where a feasibility study is performed to investigate different solutions considering soft and hard measures.
Abstract: The Belgian coastal town of Wenduine is situated at a change in coastline orientation and experiences beach erosion. A few kilometres to the northeast, the access channel to the Blankenberge marina experiences sedimentation due to littoral drift. On behalf of the Coastal Division of the Flemish Government, an integrated study on the mitigating measures for these morphodynamic issues at both Wenduine and Blankenberge is performed. This paper focuses on the design studies of the measures at Wenduine. A feasibility study is performed to investigate different solutions considering soft and hard measures. A conceptual design of the measures is carried out as a basis for a cost-benefit analysis. The solutions are also evaluated for morphodynamic effectiveness, currents and swimming safety, ecology and architectural aspects. The morphodynamic response and the hydrodynamic conditions are simulated using the numerical model XBeach and exported to a web application to visualize the effects of the different scenarios during stakeholder workshops. The construction of a rock groyne field in front of the dike of Wenduine is identified as the most effective and economic solution. During the design phase, the layout of the groyne field is optimized and this solution is further detailed.
