TL;DR: A compact three-dimensional dynamic cross-linked net formed of glycerol-water-borax net that has self-adhesive properties and strain sensitivity and the hydrogel exhibited an ultrafast self-healing ability and the antifreeze and moisturizing properties of the gel are improved.
Abstract: Recently, flexible, injectable, and strain-sensitive hydrogels have attracted great research interest for application as electronic skin and wearable strain sensors. The synergistic integration of high flexibility, rapid self-healing, and antifreezing properties makes injectable, strain-sensitive, and self-healing guar gum hydrogels still a great challenge. Here, inspired by the strong hydrogen bonding of glycerol and water, the chelation cross-linking between glycerol and borax, we constructed a compact three-dimensional dynamic cross-linked net formed of glycerol-water-borax. Under stress, dynamic interactions of glycerol-water-borax net act as sacrificial bond energy for effective dissipation, which enables the hydrogel to achieve high flexibility, stretchability, and injectability. More importantly, because of the presence of glycerol, the antifreeze and moisturizing properties of the gel are improved. The hydrogel also exhibited an ultrafast self-healing ability of only 15 s. In addition, the results show that the hydrogel has self-adhesive properties and strain sensitivity. The hydrogels have the potential to be used to make flexible, wearable, and 3D-printable electronic skin and strain-sensitive sensors.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of different gums viz. gum arabic (GA), guar gum (GG), k-carrageenan gum (KG), and xanthan gum (XG) on rheological and 3D printing characteristics of vitamin D enriched orange concentrate (OC) wheat starch (WS) blends were evaluated and compared.
Abstract: This study examined the effects of different gums viz. gum arabic (GA), guar gum (GG), k-carrageenan gum (KG), and xanthan gum (XG) on rheological and 3D printing characteristics of vitamin D (Vit D) enriched orange concentrate (OC) wheat starch (WS) blends. The textural and microstructural properties of printed objects from above mixture were evaluated and compared. The addition of gums induced an increase in apparent viscosity, storage modulus (G′), and loss modulus (G″) of the OC-WS mixtures, while GA decreased the apparent viscosity and G′. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis of 3D printed samples revealed that the movement of transverse time (T2) toward closer to 0 ms indicated an increase in immobilized and bound water populations suggesting the gel formation. The slight shift toward shorter wavelength in FT-IR results for the broadband centered around 3400 cm−1 after addition of gums possibly caused an increase of G′ and load bearing capacity of the blends. 3D printing characteristics revealed that the objects printed using KG containing blend possessed maximum fidelity to the target geometry and good loading bearing capacity, preventing collapsing over time due to the proper G′ value. At tanδ of 0.238, OC-WS-KG mixture achieved the best printing condition. Higher tanδ of GA (0.038) containing samples led to an unwanted collapse of the printed constructs. The objects printed using KG also exhibited the smoothest visible surface as well as microstructure and best mastication properties. Considering the studied features, vitamin D enriched OC with WS-KG was found to be the best match for orange fruit concentrate-based 3D food printing. This work demonstrates the novel ways to develop fortified 3D printed foods.

TL;DR: In this article, a study was carried out to maintain the quality of sweet cherry by using the guar gum (GG) and ginseng extract (GSE) coatings during storage at 20°C and 70-75% RH for 8 days.
Abstract: The present study was carried out to maintain the quality of sweet cherry by using the guar gum (GG) and ginseng extract (GSE) coatings during storage at 20 °C and 70–75% RH for 8 days. Coatings with 0.15% (m/v) GG + 0.1% (m/v) calcium chloride + 0.1% (m/v) glycerol + 1% (m/v) GSE presented the best characteristics to uniformly coat sweet cherry surface. Quality (weight loss, decay percentage, firmness), respiration rate, nutrient components (total soluble solids, titratable acid, ascorbic acid, total phenols, anthocyanins) and malondialdehyde evaluations were performed. Coatings with GG-GSE controlled water loss and delayed loss of firmness and of titratable acid, ascorbic acid and total phenols, compared with untreated fruit. Overall, coatings developed in this study extend sweet cherries’ shelf life for about 8 days, demonstrating for the first time that the combination of guar gum and ginseng extract as edible coating materials has great potential in expanding the shelf life of fruits.

TL;DR: In this paper, the enhancement of pH response capability was demonstrated with a 5-flourouracil (5-FU)-loaded guar gum (GG)-grafted-lysine-β-cyclodextrin (Lβ-CD) drug carrier.
Abstract: The physiological environment is a crucial factor in biomedical systems, which can be regulated with relative ease both in vitro and in vivo Control of pH has emerged as a powerful strategy in cancer therapy because pH has a profound effect on the interaction of a polymeric-based drug delivery system with tumor cells In this regard, the enhancement of pH response capability was demonstrated with a 5-flourouracil (5-FU)-loaded guar gum (GG)-grafted-lysine-β-cyclodextrin (L-β-CD) drug carrier The size, charge, morphology, and encapsulation efficiency of the 5-FU-loaded polymeric carrier were characterized for the control and sustained release of the drug In a specific cancer pH environment, 5-FU-loaded GG-g-L-β-CD could rapidly swallow, disassemble, and release 5-FU by accepting or losing electrons In vitro observations indicate that GG-g-L-β-CD dramatically releases 5-FU in an acidic environment rather than in a basic environment In vitro antitumor activity tests showed that 5-FU-loaded GG-g-L-β-CD had a higher cytotoxicity against KB cells, with an IC50 value of 138 μg ml−1 The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by 5-FU in the KB cells showed efficient suppression of tumour cell growth The Hoechst assay revealed the active nature of 5-FU in the cell nucleus of the KB cells The potential mitochondrial damage by apoptosis in KB cells greatly increased cell death Therefore, due to its active nature, the pH-sensitive 5-FU-loaded GG-g-L-β-CD carrier is a potential drug delivery system for safe and effective cancer therapy, and it can be useful for inhibiting tumour cell growth
