TL;DR: In this paper, a transmitter of information to be communicated in secure form is optically coupled to a composite optical fiber at one end, the fiber being connected to a receiver of the secure information at the other end.
Abstract: A transmitter of information to be communicated in secure form is optically coupled to a composite optical fiber at one end, the fiber being connected to a receiver of the secure information at the other end. The composite optical fiber has cores including a central core for carrying the secure information, one or more guard signal cores, a cladding matrix surrounding all the cores, and a metallic or other nontransmissive film surrounding the central core but not the guard cores. A guard signal optical transmitter section is coupled to the guard cores for jamming any leakage of secure information through the film, and a guard signal receiver section is provided at the other end of the fiber for monitoring purposes. The optical transmitter apparatus employs pulse code modulation (PCM) and sends related security bits in the guard and secure signals. The optical receiver apparatus features amplitude monitoring and a comparison of the related security bits and provides a warning when unexpected changes indicative of tampering are observed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a guard rail device is attached in each side of the vehicle and comprises: a horizontal guard rail extending from about the rear of the front wheels to about the front of the rear wheels of a vehicle.
Abstract: A guard rail device for attachment to a large wheel diameter vehicle. The guard rail device is attached in each side of the vehicle and comprises: A horizontal guard rail extending from about the rear of the front wheels to about the front of the rear wheels of the vehicle and extends substantially within the plane of the rear and front wheels of the vehicle. The guard rail device is positioned at such a height that when the vehicle is traveling across a road surface the guard rail does not touch the road surface. The guard rail device further has height adjustable attachment members for attaching the guard rail to the vehicle. When the vehicle is traveling across the road surface and an object collides into the side of the vehicle the guard rail prevents the object from falling under the large diameter rear wheels of the vehicle.

TL;DR: In this paper, a guard member is mounted on a chain saw for swinging movement between an actuate position and a reset position, and a brake band is integral with a bowed column spring which applies the braking force to arrest movement of the cutting chain.
Abstract: A guard member is mounted on the chain saw for swinging movement between an actuate position and a reset position. The guard member occupies a normal position between the actuate and reset positions. A brake band is integral with a bowed column spring which applies the braking force to arrest movement of the cutting chain. A latching mechanism includes an arm with a latch pin engaged by a yieldable latch finger; this latch finger is integral with the bowed column spring. The guard member deflects the latch finger in response to movement of the guard to its actuate position; this action allows the column spring to apply the brake. The guard member is moved to its actuate position in response to a sudden movement of the chain saw, as in the case of "kickback"; this movement of the guard member is brought about by inertia or the engagement of the guard with the operator's body (most likely the wrist or the back of his hand) during this abrupt movement of the chain saw. Manual swinging of the guard to its reset position deactivates the brake and re-establishes the latch.

TL;DR: A sterility guard for piercing devices, connectors and needles such as are used in the medical and surgical fields, which gives positive indication if the same has been removed from the piercing device or other connector and subsequently replaced, thereby compromising the sterility of the device as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A sterility guard for piercing devices, connectors and needles such as are used in the medical and surgical fields, which gives positive indication if the same has been removed from the piercing device or other connector and subsequently replaced, thereby compromising the sterility of the device. In one form a tubular guard closed at one end is adapted to be applied over a blood spike, for instance, and a projecting portion at the open end of the guard is provided with an integral extension which is engageable in an opening in a portion of the blood spike or a connector of another kind. This extension has a weakened or attenuated portion which is broken when the guard is removed to give a positive indication that the guard may have been removed even though it is later replaced. In another form the guard is used to protect the sterility of the otherwise exposed ends of a pair of connectors or the like. In this form the guard itself may comprise a tubular member open at both ends and an extension such as referred to in the preceding paragraph will be provided at each end of the tubular guard, one of the extension being connected with each of the connector portions which is being protected by the guard.
