TL;DR: In this paper, a high speed processor finds at least 3 preselected feature points on an object, which when considered with the data base for the object, allows a rapid 6 degree of freedom solution for object location relative to the camera and thence connected automation.
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for determining the position and attitude of objects, together with robotic systems employing same, and methods of targeting objects for such purposes. Particularly of interest is the application to continuous conveyors, particularly in the process of automobile manufacture. Also disclosed is the use of naturally occuring object features as targets in a machine vision based robot (or other) guidance system. In one embodiment, a special high speed processor finds at least 3 preselected feature points on an object, which when considered with the data base for the object, allows a rapid 6 degree of freedom solution for the object location relative to the camera and thence connected automation. While primarily envisioned for industrial robots, the invention is useful for all sorts of machines including vehicles, construction machinery and the like--anywhere the target object has a known data base relative to the features in question.

TL;DR: In this paper, the steering correction angle is calculated to point the vehicle toward the intercept point and the steering guide is used to display the steering angle relative to the current heading and the current track error or distance from the desired path.
Abstract: A swathing guidance system includes a controller storing data defining a desired vehicle path, a position detector subsystem such as a differential GPS receiver, and a display to graphically display current spatial parameters and corrective steering actions to place the vehicle on the desired path or to maintain it on the path. The controller periodically selects a future intercept point on the path and calculates a steering correction angle to point the vehicle toward the intercept point. The display includes a steering guide which displays the steering correction angle relative to the current heading and the current track error or distance from the desired path. The steering correction angle can alternatively be applied to an automatic steering mechanism to automatically maintain the vehicle on the desired path. In agricultural applications, the system is applicable to both parallel and contour cultivation modes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a flight guidance system providing perspective flight guidance symbology using positioning and terrain information provides increased pilot situational awareness of the pilot's aircraft using a positioning system and a detailed mapping system.
Abstract: A flight guidance system providing perspective flight guidance symbology using positioning and terrain information provides increased pilot situational awareness of the pilot's aircraft. The guidance system uses a positioning system and a detailed mapping system to provide a perspective display for use in an aircraft. A precision pathway flight guidance (PFG) symbology set is thereby displayed on a pilot display. The PFG symbology set includes broken line symbols representing an open tunnel and providing flow field data, a half-bracket symbol to indicate that the aircraft is no longer in the open tunnel represented by the broken line symbols and a quickened flight path vector (QFPV) symbol to provide the pilot with predictive flight path information. A flight director system and tunnel generator component provide for updating the displayed PDFG symbology set based upon current aircraft conditions (e.g., aircraft position) and stored flight path information.
