Abstract: The band structure of Mn-based Heusler alloys of the $C{1}_{b}$ crystal structure (MgAgAs type) has been calculated with the augmented-spherical-wave method. Some of these magnetic compounds show unusual electronic properties. The majority-spin electrons are metallic, whereas the minority-spin electrons are semiconducting.

Abstract: Using the full-potential screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method we study the full-Heusler alloys based on Co, Fe, Rh, and Ru. We show that many of these compounds show a half-metallic behavior; however, in contrast to the half-Heusler alloys the energy gap in the minority band is extremely small due to states localized only at the Co (Fe, Rh, or Ru) sites which are not present in the half-Heusler compounds. The full-Heusler alloys show a Slater-Pauling behavior and the total spin magnetic moment per unit cell ${(M}_{t})$ scales with the total number of valence electrons ${(Z}_{t})$ following the rule ${M}_{t}{=Z}_{t}\ensuremath{-}24.$ We explain why the spin-down band contains exactly 12 electrons using arguments based on group theory and show that this rule holds also for compounds with less than 24 valence electrons. Finally we discuss the deviations from this rule and the differences compared to the half-Heusler alloys.

Abstract: This paper reports on the bulk properties of the quaternary Heusler alloy Co2Mn1xFexSi with the Fe concentration x =0,1/2,1. All samples, which were prepared by arc melting, exhibit L21 long-range order over the complete range of Fe concentration. The structural and magnetic properties of the Co2Mn1xFexSi Heusler alloys were investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, high- and low-temperature magnetometry, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The electronic structure was explored by means of highenergy photoemission spectroscopy at about 8 keV photon energy. This ensures true bulk sensitivity of the measurements. The magnetization of the Fe-doped Heusler alloys is in agreement with the values of the magnetic moments expected for a Slater-Pauling-like behavior of half-metallic ferromagnets. The experimental findings are discussed on the basis of self-consistent calculations of the electronic and magnetic structure. To achieve good agreement with experiment, the calculations indicate that on-site electron-electron correlation must be taken into account, even at low Fe concentration. The present investigation focuses on searching for the quaternary compound where the half-metallic behavior is stable against outside influences. Overall, the results suggest that the best candidate may be found at an iron concentration of about 50%.

Abstract: Electric, thermal, optical, and magnetic properties have been investigated for ferromagnetic (ferrimagnetic) ordered double perovskites, A2CrReO6 (A=Sr and Ca) Sr2CrReO6 is found to be a metallic ferromagnet with a high Curie temperature (TC=635 K), possibly the highest-TC half metal among the perovskite family By contrast, Ca2CrReO6 is a ferromagnetic Mott insulator with TC of 360 K

Abstract: Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with a stacking structure of epitaxial Co2MnSi/Al–O barrier/poly-crystalline Co75Fe25 were fabricated using an ultrahigh vacuum sputtering system. The epitaxial Co2MnSi bottom electrode exhibited highly ordered L21 structure and very smooth surface morphology. Observed magnetoresistance (MR) ratios of 70% at room temperature (RT) and 159% at 2 K are the highest values to date for MTJs using a Heusler alloy electrode. A high spin-polarization of 0.89 at 2 K for Co2MnSi obtained from Julliere's model coincided with the half-metallic band structure that was predicted by theoretical calculations.
