TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a handoff protocol for storing, manipulating, retrieving, and forwarding state, e.g., context and other information, used to support communications sessions with one or more end nodes, i.e., mobile devices.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for storing, manipulating, retrieving, and forwarding state, e.g., context and other information, used to support communications sessions with one or more end nodes, e.g., mobile devices, are described. Various features are directed to a mobile node controlling the transfer of state from a first access node to a second access node during a handoff operation thereby eliminating any need for state transfer messages to be transmitted between the second access node and the first access node during handoff. Other features of the invention are directed to the use of a core network node to store state information. State information stored in the core node can be accessed and used by access nodes in cases where a mobile node does not send a state transfer message during a handoff, e.g., because communication with the first access node is lost or because such messages are not supported.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for determining a handover for a mobile station in a multicellular communication system including the steps of measuring received signal parameters received from a serving cell and a plurality of neighboring cells is presented.
Abstract: A method for determining a handover for a mobile station in a multicellular communication system including the steps of measuring received signal parameters received from a serving cell and a plurality of neighboring cells, comparing received signal parameters with a variable threshold value for each of the plurality of neighbor cells, measuring the amount of time, or the number of times, the received signal parameters are above the threshold value for each of the plurality of neighbor cells, and determining handover based on the measurement.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple and flexible over-air protocol for use with a mobile telephone system, having hand-held telephones in a microcell or other type of cellular communication system is presented.
Abstract: A simple and flexible over-air protocol for use with a mobile telephone system, having hand-held telephones in a microcell or other type of cellular communication system. A method in which user stations communicate with one or more base stations to place and receive telephone calls, in which the user stations are provided a secure voice or data link and have the ability to handoff calls between base stations while such calls are in progress. Each base station has a set of "air channels" to which it transmits in sequence. The air channels supported by each base station are called that base station's "polling loop". A user station receives general polling information on an unoccupied air channel, transmits responsive information to the base station, and awaits acknowledgment from the base station. Each base station may therefore simultaneously maintain communication with as many user stations as there are air channels in its polling loop. The ability of a user station to communicate on any unoccupied air channel makes the protocol air-channel agile, while the stability of user station and base station clocks may define air channels, gaps, and minor frames.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for improved sector handoff within a sectorized communication cell utilizing a wireless communication system was proposed, where the mobile radio telephone is in close proximity of the base antenna to avoid drops and adverse handoffs in high interference, low signal strength areas.
Abstract: A method for improved sector handoff within a sectorized communication cell utilizing a wireless communication systems. A sector handoff of a mobile radio telephone is performed in accordance with a first set of parameters if the mobile radio telephone is not in close proximity to a base antenna. Sector handoff of the mobile radio telephone is performed in accordance with a second different set of parameters when the mobile radio telephone is in close proximity of the base antenna. The second different set of parameters are utilized in close proximity to the base antenna to avoid drops and adverse handoffs in high interference, low signal strength areas and provide improved sector handoff when the mobile radio telephone encounters distorted conditions, such that improved sector handoff can be achieved.

TL;DR: In this paper, the handoff in a wireless communication network comprised of a local area network connected to a plurality of base stations, each of which has a geographic area defined as a cell, within which mobile stations can communicate with a base station, with each such base station being capable of performing bidirectional wireless communication with one or more of said mobile stations under control of a controller.
Abstract: Methods for handoff in a wireless communication network comprised of a local area network connected to a plurality of base stations, each of which has a geographic area, defined as a cell, within which mobile stations can communicate with a base station, with each such base station being capable of performing bidirectional wireless communication with one or more of said mobile stations under control of a controller, with communication between base stations and mobile stations being performed by frequency hopping, with there being n available frequency hopping channels in a fixed frequency band, with each channel being of a same fixed duration and having a fixed frequency different than another channel. The handoff method employs structure and techniques for determining by a mobile station that the quality of transmission between it and a current base station has degraded below a predetermined performance level, structure and technique for said mobile station to listen to each of successive frequency channels for a duration substantially less than said fixed duration of a channel until it senses a transmission from another base station, and structure and techniques for transferring control of said mobile station to said another base station in response to the sensed transmission.
