Abstract: Provided are a pointing apparatus capable of providing haptic feedback, and a haptic interaction system and method using the same. The pointing apparatus includes a wireless communication unit, a controller, and a haptic stimulator. The wireless communication unit receives an event including haptic output information through wireless communication with the outside. The controller generates a control signal for reproducing a haptic pattern corresponding to the haptic output information. The haptic stimulator reproduces the haptic pattern by means of the control signal. Thus, it is possible to increase the performance and usability of a user interface of a user terminal including a touch screen.

Abstract: A new approach to the design of teleoperation systems is presented. It is proposed that the teleoperation slave be a coarse-fine manipulator with a fine-motion wrist identical to the teleoperation master. By using a combination of position and rate control, such a system would require only small operator hand motions but would provide low mechanical impedance, high motion resolution and force feedback over a substantial volume. A new teleoperation system, consisting of a conventional manipulator and two identical magnetically levitated wrists, has been developed using this approach and is described in this paper. Aspects of mechanical, system and computational design are discussed. It is shown that the best way to position the slave is by decoupling position and rate control, with the conventional robot controlled in rate mode and its wrist in position mode. Kinesthetic feedback is achieved through wrist-level coordinated force control. Transparency is improved through feedforward of sensed hand forces to the master and environment forces to the slave. To maintain stability, the amount of damping in the system is controlled by the sensed environment forces. Experimental results demonstrating excellent performance are presented.

Abstract: The tactile internet will enable a new range of capabilities to enable immersive remote operations and interactions with a physical world. Tactile internet use cases span over many fields, from remote operation of industrial applications in, e.g., hazardous environments, via remote-controlled driving in a fully automated intelligent transport system, to remote surgery where the unique expert skills can be delivered to different locations in the world. Fifth-generation (5G) communication will play a fundamental part in this tactile internet vision, as it will provide necessary capabilities for the demanding communication needs in terms of reliability and low latency, for operators or teleoperated systems that are connected wirelessly. This paper provides an overview of tactile internet services and haptic interactions and communication. The 5G functionality for ultrareliable and low-latency services is described in depth and it is shown how 5G new radio (NR) and the evolved long-term evolution (LTE) radio interface can achieve guaranteed low-latency wireless transmission. The costs for providing reliable and low-latency wireless transmission in terms of reduced spectral efficiency and coverage are discussed. The 5G system architecture with a software-based network design based on a distributed cloud platform is presented. It is shown how the 5G network is configured for tactile internet services via multidomain orchestration.

Abstract: Systems and methods for content- and/or context-specific haptic effects are disclosed. In one embodiment electronic content is received by an electronic device. A plurality of predefined effects are received. The plurality of predefined effects may be a database of predefined haptic effects, a library of predefined haptic effects, or a list of predefined haptic effects. An association between at least one predefined haptic effect from the plurality of predefined haptic effects and a predefined event is received. An occurrence of the predefined event is identified wherein the occurrence of the predefined event is associated with a portion of the electronic content. In response to identifying the occurrence of the event, the predefined haptic effect can be generated.

Abstract: A haptic feedback system for a robotic catheter system including a robotic catheter manipulator assembly including one or more removably mounted robotic catheter device cartridges and robotic sheath device cartridges, with each cartridge being generally linearly movable relative to the robotic catheter manipulator assembly. The haptic feedback system may include a user interface device for controlling an operation associated with the catheter and/or sheath device cartridges, and a control system for evaluating a predetermined and/or a measured operational parameter of the haptic feedback system. The user interface device may provide haptic feedback to a user based on the evaluation by the control system.
