TL;DR: Requirements and guidelines for the performance measures of haptic devices are set out and performance measures introduced which have so far not been pertinent in traditional robotics; these include, peak force, peak acceleration and frequency dependent measurements.
Abstract: A haptic interface is distinct from other display devices because it is bi-directional; it is capable of both reading and writing input to and from a human user Due to both the direct human interaction and bi-directionality there has been much ambiguity in describing and evaluating these devices, making evaluation and comparison difficult The goal of this paper is to set out requirements and guidelines for the performance measures of haptic devices and to hopefully lead towards resolving the current equivocal situation In particular, performance measures are introduced which have so far not been pertinent in traditional robotics; these include, peak force, peak acceleration and frequency dependent measurements Performance measures often quoted in traditional robotics are also discussed, however, the focus and relevance of these measures are different in haptic devices Each of the suggested performance measures in this paper is discussed with respect to its importance, its measurabilty and the condition under which it should be measured

TL;DR: Conditions under which haptic interaction displays can enhance human perception and performance are identified and haptic design guidelines can aid developers of multimodal interactive systems.
Abstract: We survey the haptics literature and identify conditions under which haptic interaction displays can enhance human perception and performance. Integrating haptic interactions in multimodal systems requires understanding user's sensory, perceptual, and cognitive abilities and limitations. Haptic design guidelines can aid developers of multimodal interactive systems. Haptic interaction relates to all aspects of touch and body movement and the application of these senses to computer interaction. This involves not only sensation and perception, but also motor and cognitive aspects of active movement (that is, self-initiated movement) for which detailed motor plans are created, stored in memory, and compared to receptor feedback from the muscles, joints, and skin.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system for generating haptic effects senses at least two generally simultaneous touches on a touchscreen and, in response, generates a dynamic haptic effect, which is then used to generate a dynamic effect.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the simplest possible cobot which has only a single joint (a steerable wheel) and two control modes of this "unicycle cobot" are developed in detail, termed virtual caster and virtual wall control.
Abstract: A “cobot” is a robotic device which manipulates objects in collaboration with a human operator. A cobot provides assistance to the human operator by setting up virtual surfaces which can be used to constrain and guide motion. While conventional servoactuated haptic displays may be used in this way also, an important distinction is that, while haptic displays are active devices which can supply energy to the human operator, cobots are intrinsically passive. This is because cobots do not use servos to implement constraint, but instead employ “steerable” nonholonomic joints. As a consequence of their passivity, cobots are potentially wellsuited to safety-critical tasks (e.g. surgery) or those which involve large interaction forces (e.g. automobile assembly). This paper focuses on the simplest possible cobot, which has only a single joint (a steerable wheel). Two control modes of this “unicycle cobot”, termed “virtual caster” and “virtual wall” control, are developed in detail. Experimental results are also presented.

TL;DR: This paper discusses the design, analysis, and implementation of two categories of virtual fixtures: guidance virtual fixtures, which assist the user in moving the manipulator along desired paths or surfaces in the workspace, and forbidden-region virtual fixture, which prevent the manipulators from entering into forbidden regions of the workspace.
Abstract: Haptic virtual fixtures are software-generated force and position signals applied to human operators in order to improve the safety, accuracy, and speed of robot-assisted manipulation tasks. Virtual fixtures are effective and intuitive because they capitalize on both the accuracy of robotic systems and the intelligence of human operators. In this paper, we discuss the design, analysis, and implementation of two categories of virtual fixtures: guidance virtual fixtures, which assist the user in moving the manipulator along desired paths or surfaces in the workspace, and forbidden-region virtual fixtures, which prevent the manipulator from entering into forbidden regions of the workspace. Virtual fixtures are analyzed in the context of both cooperative manipulation and telemanipulation systems, considering issues related to stability, passivity, human modeling, and applications.
