TL;DR: In this paper, a self-consistent solution for the dynamics of a high-voltage, capacitive RF sheath driven by a sinusoidal current source is obtained, under the assumptions of time-independent, collisional ion motion and inertialess electrons.
Abstract: A self-consistent solution for the dynamics of a high-voltage, capacitive RF sheath driven by a sinusoidal current source is obtained, under the assumptions of time-independent, collisional ion motion and inertialess electrons. Values of the ion current density, the sheath capacitance per unit area for the fundamental voltage harmonic, and the conductance per unit area for stochastic heating by the oscillating sheath are calculated. The ratio of the DC to the peak value of the oscillating voltage is found to be 0.40, while the second and third voltage harmonics are, respectively, 19.3% and 5.3% of the fundamental. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied continuous and discontinuous pulse-width modulation for the three-level neutral-point-clamped voltage source inverter in high power, medium voltage applications and showed that the average switching frequency is not directly proportional to the carrier or sampling frequency.
Abstract: The three-level neutral-point-clamped voltage source inverter is widely used in high power, medium voltage applications. This paper studies continuous and discontinuous pulse-width modulation for this inverter. Detailed analysis of discontinuous modulation shows that the average switching frequency is not directly proportional to the carrier or sampling frequency, since additional switching transitions occur between different regions of discontinuity. At typical switching frequencies for high power applications (up to 2 kHz) these additional transitions contribute significantly to the inverter's total losses, so that a proper comparison of the harmonic performance can only be carried out under constant loss conditions with varying carrier frequency. This comparison is performed for a typical industrial medium voltage inverter. The paper then considers the major issues of neutral-point voltage balancing and loss distribution within the inverter, for the identified optimal modulation schemes.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dominant harmonics were always contained within the lowest six harmonics (for fundamental frequencies of 100, 200, and 400 Hz), but there were marked individual differences in the exact distribution of dominance across harmonics.
Abstract: These experiments were conducted to determine the dominance of each partial in determining the residue pitch of a complex tone. Subjects were required to make pitch matches to a complex tone which had one partial slightly mistuned from its ‘‘correct’’ harmonic value. The shift in residue pitch was measured as a function of the frequency shift of the harmonic, for each harmonic in turn. For mistunings up to ±2%–3% the shift in residue pitch was approximately a linear function of the shift in the harmonic, but for greater mistunings the shift in residue pitch was reduced. The degree to which a given harmonic can influence residue pitch gives a measure of the dominance of that harmonic. The dominant harmonics were always contained within the lowest six harmonics (for fundamental frequencies of 100, 200, and 400 Hz), but there were marked individual differences in the exact distribution of dominance across harmonics. The level of a harmonic relative to adjacent harmonics can have a significant effect on its dominance. The implications of the results for theories of pitch perception are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the iron loss of interior permanent magnet motors driven by PWM inverters from both results of the experiments and the finite-element analysis, and clarified that the largest component at low speed condition under maximum torque control, whereas the loss caused by the harmonic magnetomotive forces of the permanent magnet remarkably increase at high-speed condition under flux-weakening control.
Abstract: In this paper, the authors investigate the iron loss of interior permanent magnet motors driven by pulsewidth modulation (PWM) inverters from both results of the experiments and the finite-element analysis. In the analysis, the iron loss of the motor is decomposed into several components due to their origins, for instance, the fundamental field, carrier of the PWM inverter, slot ripples, and harmonic magnetomotive forces of the permanent magnet in order to clarify the main loss factors. The Fourier transformation and the finite-element method considering the carrier harmonics are applied to this calculation. The calculated iron loss is compared with the measurement at each driving condition. The measured and the calculated results agree well. It is clarified that the iron loss caused by the carrier of the PWM inverter is the largest component at low-speed condition under the maximum torque control, whereas the loss caused by the harmonic magnetomotive forces of the permanent magnet remarkably increase at high-speed condition under the flux-weakening control
