Abstract: Nonlinear capillary instability of an axisymmetric infinite liquid column is investigated with an initial velocity disturbance consisting of a fundamental and one harmonic component. A third-order solution is developed using the method of strained co-ordinates. For the fundamental disturbance alone, the solution shows that a cut-off zone of wavenumbers (k) exists such that the surface waves grow exponentially below the cut-off zone, linearly in the middle of the zone (near k = 1), and an oscillatory solution exists for wavenumbers above the boundary of the zone. For an input including both the fundamental and a harmonic, all wave components grow exponentially when the fundamental is below the cut-off zone. Using a Galilean transformation, the solution is applied to a progressive jet issuing from a nozzle. The jet breaks into drops interspersed with smaller (satellite) drops for k 0·65. It is shown theoretically that the formation of satellites can be controlled by forcing the jet with a suitable harmonic added to the fundamental.

Abstract: This paper presents a maximum-likelihood approach to multiple fundamental frequency (F0) estimation for a mixture of harmonic sound sources, where the power spectrum of a time frame is the observation and the F0s are the parameters to be estimated. When defining the likelihood model, the proposed method models both spectral peaks and non-peak regions (frequencies further than a musical quarter tone from all observed peaks). It is shown that the peak likelihood and the non-peak region likelihood act as a complementary pair. The former helps find F0s that have harmonics that explain peaks, while the latter helps avoid F0s that have harmonics in non-peak regions. Parameters of these models are learned from monophonic and polyphonic training data. This paper proposes an iterative greedy search strategy to estimate F0s one by one, to avoid the combinatorial problem of concurrent F0 estimation. It also proposes a polyphony estimation method to terminate the iterative process. Finally, this paper proposes a postprocessing method to refine polyphony and F0 estimates using neighboring frames. This paper also analyzes the relative contributions of different components of the proposed method. It is shown that the refinement component eliminates many inconsistent estimation errors. Evaluations are done on ten recorded four-part J. S. Bach chorales. Results show that the proposed method shows superior F0 estimation and polyphony estimation compared to two state-of-the-art algorithms.

Abstract: This paper discusses the problems and solutions of applying reactive compensation, either static or dynamic, to industrial power systems supplying large blocks of dc power from diode or thyristor converters. The resonance between power capacitors and system reactance can produce high harmonic voltages caused by the harmonic currents generated by converters. The interaction between these harmonic voltages and regulating systems can be minimized by the use of suitable filters. The design of these filters should eliminate the interaction between power system and load and reduce harmonic current flow. Different methods of reactive power control are also discussed.

Abstract: Variable-speed wind turbines inject harmonic currents in the network, which may potentially create voltage distortion problems. In this paper, a case study is presented for a 10-MW wind farm, intended to be connected to a network with extended high-voltage submarine cable lines. First, the system modeling approach and the harmonic load-flow calculation is described. Then, the harmonic impedance of the system is calculated for a variety of configurations and operating conditions, and its main characteristics are discussed. Harmonic load-flow calculations are provided to indicate potential voltage distortion problems. A simplified methodology, suggested in relevant IEC publications, is applied to the system and its results are compared to those of the harmonic load flow. A discussion on the summation of harmonic currents within a wind farm is also included
